Nicky Cure's Interests
|
| General | playing with stuff, idiosyncrasies, sport, music, taking things apart, the shipping forecast, maps, trying to play an instrument, technology I don't understand and then trying to understand it, old things like cars, planes, ships, gramophones, stuff kids do, trying to keep fit, trying to do the Times crossword which I am a bit rubbish at but I can sometimes do over half of it, going to the theatre. .. | | Music | anything really but I can't stand rap or disco for very long. Depends on my mood and what I am doing but I guess my faves currently are Gomez, Crowded House, Athlete, KT Tunstall, Buena Vista Social Club, Sam Sparro, Elbow, old blues stuff like Howling Wolf, Louis Jordan, BB King, Louis Prima. Baroque is good accompaniment for doing cerebrally taxing things. | | Movies | I'm not a great movie fan cos I can't sit still for very long.... but, in no particular order:
Sea Biscuit, Donnie Darko, Toy Story, Birds (by Pixar not Hitchcock), Shawshank Redemption, Reservoir Dogs, Michael (the one where John Travolta is an angel with real wings and a beer gut), the Bourne Identity series. Don't like musicals much but I do seem to know all of the words to all of the songs of Oliver!....which is a bit weird. And actually I like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang but It's the breakfast machine, the rocket propelled backpack thingy and the flying car that does it not the cheesy tunes. | | Television | The Clangers, Who Do You Think You Are, animal things, Creature Comforts, scrap heap challenge, sciencey documentaries, Porridge and most other Ronnie Barker things, Southbank show and other Arts progs. | | Books | Best books lately:
Mr Vertigo by Paul Auster
The Third Policeman by Flann O'Brien
Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman
There's a Kids book called SHH! Its The Secret Club which is just wonderful. | | Heroes | Marcel Duchamp, Cornelia Parker, Richard Wentworth, Duane Michels, Bruce Nauman, Tim Hawkinson, Victoria Wood, Billy Connelly, Fred Dibnah, Leonardo Da Vinci ( more for his flying machines than for Mona Lisa), Jem Finer, Paul Ramirez Jonas, Richard Wilson, Panamarenko, Ilya Kabakov, Gilbert and George, Spike Milligan.....people who do brilliant selfless things for others. |

Nicky Cure's Blurbs |
About me:
Warwickshire born and bred, grew up climbing trees, sliding in mud, fishing in streams with a net and a jam jar, playing football and making planes and arrows. Also did lots of dancing and gymnastics. Mum thought it was my job to do that cos i is a girl rather than learn to play a musical instrument.
Now based in Warwick. I am an artist working in multimedia and multiform. My work crosses disciplines, I tend to work with found, discarded or junk materials and objects transforming them just enough to suggest other meanings while remaining true enough to acknowledge their former role. Ideas evolving from these materials are realised in sculpture, installations, performance, but increasingly I am using photography and video. It is these media that I am currently finding the most appropriate to realise final pieces. Sound also plays an important role in some of my work where I use it as another kind of material that can be found and recycled giving multiple meaning when juxtaposed with image or object. I like to make work that cost little or no money.
My work offers an alternative way of looking at things, and aims to be thought provoking and entertaining.
