About Nicky Del Rey and The Slowtown Social Club
SLOWTOWN S.C. Having been instrumental in shaping the sound of some of Melbourne's more progressive and retrogressive acts as session players/sidemen these veterans have put out a disk of their own, 'Dead Pig Heaven', recorded at Woodstock and Fatsound studios. Rock fans would know Nicky Del Rey best as a member of INTOXICA and Ed Bates for his work with the PALACO BROTHERS and the SPORTS but these players have been working in the country/roots scene for over two decades. They played together in TRUCKASAURUS (with LISA MILLER) and more recently with the MOONEE VALLEY DRIFTERS and JACK HOWARD. Nicky started as singer/guitar slinger with the KING JERKLEWS in the early 'eighties and continued on with CRANE TRASH, DOUG MANSFIELD, MONIQUE BRUMBY, SHERRY RICH and JACK HOWARD. Ed is perhaps Melbourne's pre-eminent steel player, gracing stage and studio with ADAM HARVEY, JOE CAMILLERI, BRENT PARLANE, DAN WARNER, ANDY BAYLOR, MICHELE NICOL and SALLY DASTY to name a few. Joining them on bass is Kip Dale, formerly of San Antonio TX, who has recorded with MARK O'CONNOR and shared the bill with acts like BONNIE RAITT, THE FABULOUS THUNDERBIRDS and TOWNES VAN ZANT! Kip has played with ANDY, PETE and DONAL BAYLOR, with Ed and Nicky in the 'Drifters and was the instigator of this project. Sharky Ramos (JACK HOWARD, ANDY BAYLOR) handles drumming duties, Dan Hall (TAXI RIDE) and Emily Lubitz (TIN PAN ORANGE) grace the album with their fine voices while Jack Howard (HUNTERS AND COLLECTORS) proves that trumpet can be used for good instead of evil! Dude Brockton (ULTRASOUNDS) drums on some tracks and Greg Hunt (PLOUGHBOYS) fiddles. Catch the band live or on 'Dead Pig Heaven' and you'll hear a good mix of original material (by Del Rey and other fine Melbourne songwriters) and covers ranging from western swing through rockabilly, hardcore honky-tonk and tearjerkers, to straight out rock'n'roll. Enjoy! "... whether they're scootin' through covers or originals, rocking out or crying in their beers, everything about the Slowtown Social Club feels right... love to swing... a heaping shovelful of fun... * * * *... ". Jeff Glorfeld, THE AGE. "... tight as a new wire fence... beautifully recorded... a great instrumental sound that is all too rare in Australia...". Martin Jones, RHYTHMS.
