Australia is a sweeping romantic adventure event film created by internationally acclaimed and award winning writer, producer and director, Baz Luhrmann.
Australia is an epic and romantic action adventure, set in that country on the explosive brink of World War II. In it, an English aristocrat (Nicole Kidman) travels to the faraway continent where she meets a rough-hewn local (Hugh Jackman) and reluctantly agrees to join forces with him to save the land she inherited. Together, they embark upon a transforming journey across hundreds of miles of the world's most beautiful yet unforgiving terrain, only to face the bombing of the city of Darwin by the Japanese forces that attacked Pearl Harbour. With his new film, Luhrmann is painting on a vast canvas, creating a cinematic experience that brings together romance, drama, adventure and spectacle.
Baz Luhrmann, the man who reignited the Hollywood musical with Moulin Rouge, has spent two years creating the biggest movie ever made about Australia - a big movie that tells a big story about a big country.
Filmed throughout the Northern Territory, Western Australia, New South Wales and Queensland, the land of Australia plays a pivotal role in this captivating work. Catherine Martin, the double Academy Award winning Production and Costume Designer, will again inspire with her visual expertise, re-creating outback Australia and Darwin of the 1930s.
Joining Kidman and Jackman is a who's who of Australian acting talent including Australian acting legends Ray Barrett, Bryan Brown, Jack Thompson and Bill Hunter. They star alongside David Wenham, Ben Mendelsohn, John Jarrett, Kerry Walker, Barry Otto, David Gulpilil and David Ngoombujarra.
Other key cast members include Matthew Whittet, Arthur Dignam, Bruce Spence, Tony Barry, Sean Hall, Essie Davis, Eddie Baroo, Nathin Butler, Jacek Koman, Sandy Gore, and Yuen Wah from China. Indigenous cast members include Lillian Crombie, Ursula Yovich, Angus Pilauki, Crusoe Kurrdal, Jamie Gulpilil, and 11-year-old Broome boy Brandon Walters, in his feature film debut.
NICOLE KIDMAN - LADY SARAH ASHLEY
Nicole Kidman first came to the attention of American audiences with her critically acclaimed performance in Phillip Noyce's riveting 1989 psychological thriller Dead Calm. She has since become an internationally-recognized, award-winning actress known for her range and versatility.
In 2003, Kidman won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a BAFTA Award and a Berlin Silver Bear for her portrayal of Virginia Woolf in Stephen Daldry's The Hours. In 2002, she was honored with her first Oscar nomination for her performance in Baz Luhrmann's innovative musical, Moulin Rouge! For that role, and her performance in writer/director Alejandro Amenabar's psychological thriller, The Others, she received dual 2002 Golden Globe nominations, winning for Best Actress in a Musical. She was awarded her initial Golden Globe for a pitch-perfect, wickedly funny portrayal of a woman obsessed with becoming a TV personality at all costs, in Gus Van Sant's To Die For, and has been nominated three additional times: for her performances in Jonathan Glazer's Birth, Anthony Minghella's Cold Mountain, and Robert Benton's Billy Bathgate.
She is currently reunited with Moulin Rouge! director Baz Luhrmann and fellow Australian actor Hugh Jackman filming the epic love story set in Australia's outback.
Kidman voiced the role of Norma Jean in last year's Academy Award winning animated musical Happy Feet, reuniting her with the Australian director most responsible for launching her career, George Miller. She narrated the documentary release (last year's Sundance Grand Jury Award and Audience Award-winner), God Grew Tired of Us, and is also the narrator in the film biography of Simon Wiesenthal, I Have Never Forgotten You.
Kidman has done many films including Sydney Pollack's The Interpreter with Sean Penn; Lars von Trier's Dogville with Paul Bettany and Lauren Bacall; Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut with Tom Cruise; and Jane Campion's The Portrait of a Lady with John Malkovich.
In January of 2006, Kidman was awarded Australia's highest honor, the Companion in the Order of Australia. She is a worldwide ambassador for UNIFEM. Three years ago, she became the first Chair of the Women's Health Fund at UCLA, at the David Geffen School of Medicine.
