"One Canadian natural resource that never runs out is great
singer/songwriters. 'They Didn't Think So' by Manitoba's Nicole Byblow
is bright piano-based pop heralding the emergence of another stunning
homegrown talent."
-Mark Rheaume
CBC Radio
Ask singer-pianist Nicole Byblow how she measures her musical progress these days and she’ll proudly show you her fingers. Nails cut to the quick, rough calluses and hardened bumps, and a few painful looking afflictions where the skin is actually separating from under the nail bed. She smiles and says: “This is how I know I’m doing something right.”
It’s physical proof that Byblow has been practicing.
Since relocating from Winnipeg Manitoba to Nelson BC to attend Selkirk College’s Contemporary Music and Technology program in the fall of 2008, Byblow has thrown herself into honing her craft, and that dedication has become her primary concern.
“I’ve learned more about music in the past 12 months than I have in the last 10 years, I’m really not concerned about a new album or where my career is headed yet. I’m in such a developmental stage; my music is changing so much. All I’m thinking about right now is learning as much as possible and trying to get better and better.”
So while you may not see many solo performances or another record from Byblow anytime soon (her debut EP 'Unabashed' was released in January 2007), she’s been far from dormant. Aside from performing and participating in countless local bands and projects in Nelson BC, she has shared the stage with Juno award winner Stephen Fearing, and has been meeting and working with the likes of Winnipeg producer Phil Deschambault, and Juno nominated singer/songwriter Keith Macpherson of Winnipeg duo Keith and Renee.
And her musical progress is apparent in more ways than mangled hands. New songs Byblow has written and recorded, including the bouncy ‘They Didn’t Think So,’ bring to mind the energy and prowess of pop piano-pounder Ben Folds, as well as the sophistication of fellow classically trained ivory tickler Sarah Slean ... and prove Byblow is well on her way to where she wants to be.
