The name nideit comes from Dave’s Mother. She would call Dave an idiot when he would joke around with her, but because of her Portuguese accent, it sounded more like nid - ee- it. David lost his mom to cancer his senior year in high school and the idea for the name was born in her memory.
Nideit started out as a dream to play energetic music that would move the feet of the drunken bar goers and win the hearts of music lovers everywhere. The idea formed in San Francisco where David Nunes (vocals, guitar) attended his freshman year of college. With only a handful of songs, he played to anyone who would listen. He played at bon fires at the beach, on the front steps of his apartment building and, once he acquired a fake ID open mic nights in the city. He moved home for a year and played local cafes and traveled to Sacramento for open mic nights there. David then moved again, this time to Chico where he would continue playing on his front steps and playing Thursday nights at the open mic held at Has Beans.
Chico saw the beginnings of Nideit as a band. With the first drawings of the nideit logo the idea began to take hold. David was joined by Ryan Dutra, Bret Haggar, and Ryan Hedrick, and nideit was now officially a full band. This lineup was short lived, however, and ended when Ryan Dutra moved to Sacramento. A year later, Dave found himself moving to Sacramento and starting nideit up again with Dutra. Nideit was now a two man band, playing shows in Sacramento and Chico. Schedules changed, so once again Dave went back to open mic nights and cafes, now with 40 songs under his belt.
Eventually he moved back to the Modesto area and began playing in local bars. It was here that Jimi Fernandes (bass, vocals) joined Dave on stage, bringing with him an acoustic bass and an uncanny ability to add back-up vocals. After many long drives to Chico, filled with singing and screaming along to the music, Dave and Jimi began to toy with the idea of a full band. A play date was scheduled between Dave and Jay Trimble (Goodbye Productions) who brought with him, Tyler Olson (drums).
Tyler then joined the band and would bring with him the energy and excitement of his preferred genre of punk music. Nideit was now a three piece with two shows lined up. It was at these shows that Kenny Killingworth (guitar, vocals), a childhood friend of Tyler’s, would express interest in joining the band. Kenny auditioned at nideit’s first demo recording. After he showed the band some lead parts that he had written for the song “Cocaine”-Six Feet in Your Heart, he became the fourth member.
Nideit’s sophomore album, Six Feet in Your Heart, was recorded in Hayward at Art of Ears Studio by Andy Ernst (Green Day, AFI, Tiger Army, Swinging Utters). The full length album consists of three tracks rerecorded from the first album and ten from new material, including two tracks with Kenny on lead vocals. The music has a lot of different influences and elements guiding its direction. David’s main influences come from 90’s grunge and 50’s bop. Jimi’s taste lies with screamo, where Kenny listens to ska/big band and acoustic indie/folk. But we all share influences from Tyler’s preference of punk and alternative country. We make nideit music, music we love and our fans enjoy. The closest we’ve come to describing it is; Alternative grunge with a slash of punk.
Nideit has played with such acts as Sherwood, Evaline, Robben Ford, Mike Herrea of MxPx, Lorene Drive, Emerson Hart of Tonic, and many others. They have been featured on radio stations such as B93.1 and KCSS 91.9. Nideit has also played at such venues as the Hardrock Cafe, The Boardwalk, Fat Cat Music House and Lounge, Red Velvet Lounge, and the State Theater. Nideit has played such festivals as X-Fest, Modesto's Art and Wine Festival, Escalon's Park Fete, and Fat Cat's Mardi Gras.
