I started playing Hurdy-Gurdy in 1981 when my dad began making them, (see www.hurdy-gurdy.co.uk) They are the best instruments in the world by the way. My first gig was in the play 'The Hired Man" by Melvyn Bragg and Howard Goodall in 1984, with Tilda Swinton and Phillis Logan. I played with Blowzabella from 1985-2004 (see www.blowzabella.com) also 'Whirling Pope Joan' with julie murphy and Ian Luff from 1991-95, (see juliemurphymusic.com), Page and Plant from 1994-6 and with Loreena Mckennitt from 1996-2006. My main recording sessions have been with the above also, The Blue Aeroplanes, Marc Almond, Scott Walker and The Palladian Ensemble. I've played on many film soundtracks including 'The Shipping News' and 'Kingdom of Heaven'. Other albums I made were 'The Duellists' with Cliff Stapleton, Ian Luff and Chris Walshaw, 'Panic at the Cafe' with Andy Cutting, Ian Luff and Tim Panting, 'Ancient Beatbox' with Paul James, Ian Luff and Sheila Chandra and most recently, 'Pandemonium' with Becky Price, Paul, Andy and Pylon King. At present I'm working on some new tracks and no I never was a driving instructor, although I did start the course but instead fell into to making alcove cupboards, bookcases and wardrobes in the Dulwich area, which has been really fab. Here's the proof, www.nigeleaton.co.uk oh dear, a bit cupboardy? (which is a real word in the dictionary)
