  • Bio

UK booking agency http://www.myspace.com/smokingfrogproductions This space is being authored on belhalf of NMJ by friends and fans. As such it's possible to say things that the man himself might not. For instance that he is one of the most talented and original musicians of the last 30 years and that his musical influence far outweighs his commercial success. This space is primarily for the charity album project 'Planet for $ale'. See the tv film on you tube at www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AQ10DXqFu0 Far away from his usual more acoustic analogue based albums 'Planet for $ale' features Steve Hillage of Gong and System 7 fame, Guy Evans the power house drummer behind van Der Graaf Generator and Banco De Gaia the world dance outfit. Profits from each album goes into a charity with no admin costs deducted. www.environmental-assistance.org/index.html You can read more at www.snipertext.com/acatalog/ Nigel himself hates musical comparisons - and it's easy to see why as his unique style and sound somewhat defy such an excercise. However, at the risk of annoying him, the instrumental virtuosity of Gordon Giltrap springs to mind, as does the soulful songcraft of John Martyn. Add to this the intelligent polemic of Billy Bragg or Roy Harper and the complex soundscapes of Pink Floyd or Tangerine Dream and you might begin to get some idea of the sheer range and depth to be found within the music of this under-rated genius. Thanks for being here.

  • Influences

Rivers, cliff edges and vast seascapes, Gerald Durrell, Dan Fone, Dave Crosby, Shawn Phillips, Michael Chapman, early John Martyn, Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, Dylan, Mother Nature, then he stopped listening so much and started singing his own songs. Later influences Camel, Pink Floyd, Decameron, Rennaisance, Grifon, Beaver and Krause, performing poet Dave Reeves, Guy Evans of Van der Graaf Generator, Nik Turner, Roy Harper, Steve Hillage, Banco de Gaia, Phil Beer, Steve Joliffe and Barclay James Harvest who he supported on their 1980 and 1984 tours. He also has a long string of credits as guest musician and producer including the classic Solstice debut 'Silent Dance'. His partner is the highly talented classical pianist Margaret Phillips. Nigel also regularly creates soundtracks for TV and Radio including the wonderful 'Dance of Chance' with Honor Blackman for BBC radio and 'Planet for $ale' for BBC tv.
  • Sounds Like

An acoustic 12 and 6 string guitarist who sometimes flies off cliffs and plugs into something else other than electricity and pedals. A German radio station once described him as a 'One man Pink Floyd' Others have said he sounds like Harper or John Martyn but it depends what sort of gig you see him playing at and which albums of his you prefer from this songster who refuses to be labelled and is truly eclectic.
