EILIYAS / A STATIC RAINBOW: VIOLET $5.50 ppd usa/$6 ppd Europe
Eiliyas is not just an artist who fuses sounds from disparate musical zones; noise, hip hop, jazz, spoken word, he’s a dude that melts them down, makes them brittle through some alchemical process and creates his own disintegrated blend of sound. Unlike anything else you are likely to hear. Get down with chunks of static, samples, horns, words. Maybe you’ve been waiting all week to get your grand mal seizure groove on: well Saturday night is here fool.
JOHN THILL / 40 ETUDES $6 ppd usa / $8 ppd Europe
A re-issue of a record originally available back in 2003 or so, when the freak sound scene in Riverside was just cresting; it had a good year to go before it hit the rocks. This album is a great exhibit of Riverside scumbag sound aesthetics, dirty and bright, over the top and totally bipolar. Contains 40 tracks, all under a minute, which demonstrate different techniques for using jaw harp, prepared guitar, accordion and something called “the porchestra,” but they manage to be capsular pop songs at the same time. An album, which bridges the gap between John’s output in Aum Rifle and Quem Quaeiritis.

Flaspar / Andrew Jackson Jihad / Golden Boots Split CD
This 3 way split by some amazing bands from the Southwest is, in my humble opinion, one of the greatest things this label has ever been associated with. Hailing from Tucson, Las Vegas and Phoenix, all three groups produce next level pop music that is strange, beautiful and eminently listenable. Flaspar drops psychedelic dance pop that latches onto a deep groove and pummels you with extracurricular orbital effects direct from Ra himself. Andrew Jackson Jihad melds together feelings of pain, beauty and joy all with a wry, at times brutal, comic touch while affecting some bluegrass breakdowns. Golden Boots writes mind bending free-association pop songs with serious studio wizardry, horns and spirit. This is the first manufactured CD release from Nightpass, and hopefully it will set the standard we'll live by. All said, that's a high bar because I freaking love this CD. Its strengths are manifold; quality songwriting, musicianship, and yes, even a highly developed pop sensibility, which recalls everything from Neutral Milk Hotel to the Beatles to Talking Heads. Some copies come in handmade wrappers made from construction paper and twine.

This is the second part of the Static Rainbow cassette series and it is an example of forward thinking noise par excellence. In all seriousness, Tawee was one of the main reasons for my initiating this series. His tracks go beyond the territory of normal noise heshers to unexplored realms, deeper drones, hard hand drums, ethnic flourishes, crystalline structures that one might have heard during the glory days of the ECM label but you sure aren't hearing now. In a genre as democratic as noise music, Tawee stands a head above the rest, making complex compositions with great attention to detail; psychedelic, positive sound exploration. Tawee is a member of the Evolve Music crew in Southern California, a collective which has pioneered new manifestations of noise, hip hop and psychedelic jazz. Here Tawee explores the noisy psychedelic edges of the musical universe with one ten minute track and on the other side ten one minute tracks of visionary material
