In June 2002, Mike Woo, Rick Pepper, and Pete Pappavaselio, three North Reading locals jammed in Pappavaselio's parents' basement on guitar, bass, and guitar, respectively. Each took turns playing drums, although Jim Lundell, a local high school kid, rounded out the lineup on drums within a couple weeks, while Woo assumed mic duty.
This lineup rehearsed through that summer and performed one show under the name 8-Bit Avenger at a house party in Roslindale, MA that fall. The music at this time resembled a sort of progressive-punk rock, owing largely to Woo's earlier experience with the B-Squares, which had been a North Reading punk staple for the previous 5 years. The only songs performed at that show which resembled anything Night Stalker were "King Porcelain" and an early version "The Pursuit of Happiness." Upon hearing this new direction, Pappavaselio began writing and singing songs like "Only You" and "Running from the Law" in order to fit with this arena rock/heavy metal direction.
By that winter the band began recording a 5 track demo in their basement practice space in order to get future shows at clubs. Upon the completion of this recording two things happened: they adopted the name Night Stalker from an Intellivision cartridge they found in the basement, and Pepper left the band.
Another North Reading local, Joe Bailey, joined in on bass. This lineup of Night Stalker performed from roughly the beginning of 2003 to the summer of 2004, and is the lineup most recognized to date. Bailey added a blues element to the band, including the song "Dynamite Girl" which he also sang. Night Stalker produced their first real recordings at the Opium Den in North Reading, under the engineering mastermind of Doug Batchelder. This work culminated into the 3:37 EP, completed in the fall of 2003.
The following summer the band recorded their first full-length album, Unfinished Business, back in the rehearsal basement on an 8 track-tape machine formerly owned by Batchelder. Joe Bailey constructed some of the effects equipment used on that album, which was the band's heaviest to date. Woo had penned "The Martyr of Ethical Egoism" to sound as though he and Pappavaselio had co-written it, while Pappavaselio took note and wrote "Heart of Stone" under the same auspices. This song also featured "Irene" - a takeoff from the video game Ninja Gaiden - which was the band's final link to their 8-Bit Avenger past.
Joe Bailey left for college that fall while the rest of the band soldiered on, adding yet another North Reading local, Mike Cummings, on bass guitar. Cummings played with the band for roughly 6 months before leaving to go live on a farm. Bailey rejoined for that summer, recording their last EP with this lineup, Night Stalker Dies. The reunited lineup performed a farewell show at Goodtimes Emporium, after which Bailey returned to school and Lundell left for college.
Woo and Pappavaselio took the next month off, but by the fall had decided to reform the band with Keith Barr, yet another former North Reading resident, on drums and a returning Rick Pepper on bass. This lineup presented for some bipolar shows; when the band was on, it could trigger a riotous crowd, pumped up by new additions to their stage show. When they were off, things could go really sour. The band took about a year to record their next album, Night Stalker Goes to Disneyland, due to problems such as massive rewrites of songs, long takes, and even water coming into the studio. Their strained efforts were also compounded by musical differences and their being forced to relocate the band several times within a short period of time due to a lack of rehearsal spaces in the area.
By June 2007, at the band's fifth anniversary, these differences had become irreconcilable, dividing the band into two different camps. The band had performed its last show on May 19, 2007 at Dodge Street Bar and Grill. Unbeknownst to the band that it would be their last show, it was somehow fitting that a never before seen fan in the front of the audience had drawn a pentagram on his hand and shouted, "Hail Satan!" after the band's last playing of "The Night Stalker."
