Nightwatch was formed in NYC in 2002 by Warren Holt and Andrew Hurst experimenting with collisions between digital and analog manipulations, noise and beauty, improvisations and set structures. They produced their self-titled first album consisting of cuts from live sessions in 2003. Nightwatch followed their debut album with a soundtrack for John Cage's Rock's Role (2003), as well as for Nick Zedd (2003), and then a live music+video album recorded at a performance at Downtown Music Gallery in NYC (2004). Nightwatch has performed concerts at Issue Project Room, Northsix, Cakeshop as well as an improvisation with Brian Dewan, Briggan Krauss, and projectionist Raha Raissnia at Thomas Erben Gallery (2004).
With their second album, Scenes (2005), Hurst and Holt combined field recordings, tape manipulation, and relentless studio experimentation with song structures to render seven cinematic vignettes which stroll the listener through Nightwatch's surrealistic garden.
Looks (2006), Nightwatch's third release, ventures into vintage cinematic soundscapes, tropicalia, narrative sound collage, kraturock stomps, and psychedelic balladry to create their most complex work to date.
Along with their musical projects, Andrew Hurst and Warren Holt are accomplished visual artists. Hurst creates mixed-media assemblages and Holt makes paintings exploring photographic perception. Their work has been exhibited in shows nationally and internationally including The Susquehanna Art Museum, Anthology Film Archives, Saatchi NY, White Columns, Perimeter Gallery (Chicago), and Le Miroterie (Paris).
