About me:

Jay Winter Nightwolf is a Washington, DC-area American Indian/Native American teacher as well as radio commentator and host of WPFW's Nightwolf show. Each week he and his guests discuss American Indian perspectives, history, and traditions, and how they illuminate the cultural, economic, and political issues of society at large. His message is simple and direct:

"We are all members of the one human family. Let us walk together in respect, harmony, and love with one another and with all the life on this earth."

NIGHTWOLF
is broadcast each week on Pacifica's WPFW 89.3 FM
and over the Internet Sunday evenings
at 8:00 pm EST

A NATIVE AMERICAN CODE OF ETHICS

  • Rise with the sun to pray. Pray alone. Pray often. The Great Spirit will listen if you will only speak.
  • Be tolerant of those who are lost on their paths. Ignorance, conceit, anger, jealousy, and greed stem from lost souls. Pray that they will find guidance.
  • Search for yourself by yourself. Do not allow others to make your path for you. It is your road and yours alone. Others may walk it with you, but no one can walk it for you.
  • Treat the guests in your home with much consideration. Serve them the best food, give them the best beds, and treat them with respect and honor.
  • Do not take what is not yours, whether from a person, a community, the wilderness, or from a culture. It was not earned nor given. It is not yours.
  • Respect all things that are placed upon this earth, whether people, animal, or plant. Honor the Spirit in all things.
  • Honor other people's thoughts, wishes, and words. Never interrupt another, mock or rudely mimic them. Allow each person the right to personal expression.
  • Never speak of others in a bad way. The negative energy that you put out into the universe will multiply when it returns to you. All people make mistakes, and all mistakes can be forgiven. Bad thoughts cause illness of the mind, body, and spirit. Practice optimism.
  • Nature is not for us, it is a part of us. Nature is part of your worldly family.
  • Children are the seeds of our future. Plant love in their hearts and water them with wisdom and life's lessons. When they are grown, give them space to grow.
  • Avoid hurting the hearts of others. The poison of your pain will return to you.
  • Be truthful at all times. Honesty is the test of one's will within this universe.
  • Keep yourself balanced. Your mental self, spiritual self, emotional self, and physical self all need to be strong, pure, and healthy. Work out the body to strengthen the mind. Grow rich in spirit to cure emotional ails.
  • Make conscious decisions as to who you will be and how you will react. Be responsible for your own actions.
  • Respect the privacy and personal space of others. Do not touch the personal property of others, especially sacred and religious objects--this is forbidden.
  • Be true to yourself. You cannot nurture and help others if you cannot nurture and help yourself first.
  • Respect others' religious beliefs. Do not force your beliefs upon others.
  • Share your good fortune with others. Participate in charity. Be willing to give back to the people so that the People will live.

Ecclesiastes 7:11-14 "Being wise is as good as being rich; in fact, it is better. Wisdom or money can get you almost anything, but it's important to know that only wisdom can save your life. Notice the way Yahweh does things; then fall into line. Don't fight the ways of Yahweh, for who can straighten out what he has made crooked? Enjoy prosperity while you can. But when hard times strike, realize that both come from Yahweh. That way you will realize that nothing is certain in this life."

Delight yourself in ME, there is peace even in the midst of the storm, in the midst of the lean times, I AM sufficient. I AM your strength.

And endurance (fortitude) develops maturity of character (approved faith and tried integrity). Special Guest: Martha Redbone

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Today while driving through the beautiful farmlands of Skagit County, where I saw the snow geese & hard working farm workers amongst the bright yellow daffodils, I was day dreaming on my way to the Tulalip Rez, about the upcoming Tulalip Tribes Summer Art, Music & Film Fest (this is a working name…). My cell phone rang & I pulled over to answer it. It was Aaron Whitby checking in on behalf of Martha Redbone, who has submitted her press kit & awesome music for consideration for this first time annual festival. We talked for awhile & half way through the warm conversation Aaron & I thought it would work out to have Martha on NAMAPAHH First People’s Radio THIS Thursday night. I’m VERY excited about this!

I believe it was my WA DC Native radio friend Jay Winter Nightwolf who first told me about Martha & so I am honored to finally have a chance to have her on as a guest (by phone). Not only is she a world class singer & performer, she is an amazing humanitarian. She also is a motivational speaker.

So, I am dedicating an hour of Thursday night’s show to Martha, her music and her insights. I hope you can join us! If you are a fan of hers & have a favorite track, please email me! I’ll put it in the line up! Please help spread the word.

Want to know more about her?…here is info from both her MySpace & regular website…and Aaron, thanks for the call! And arranging to have her on! Thanks Jay too for sharing all your resources & encouraging me! (what would I do without my radio brothers & sisters?)

TIME OUT NY "In our opinion Redbone deserves Alicia Keys level success. She has the deep funk to back up her soul queen image and live she brings a groove-heavy powerhouse of a band"

BLUES & SOUL 5 STARS!!! review of 'Skintalk': "Occasionaly an album comes along out of nowhere that starts by giving you goosebumps and ends up by knocking you completely off your feet. This is one such album. In terms of quality and soulfulness it eclipses everything else I've heard in the past 12 months. It's that good. Really."

NEWS FROM INDIAN COUNTRY "A world class talent, Redbone's performances are nonstop high-energy affairs featuring Big Sky soulful vocals and ecstatic dancing seasoned by the tightest, funkiest band imaginable."

BIO

Martha Redbone
Singer/Songwriter/Producer/Artist

Every once in a while, you meet a woman of inimitable style. The kind of woman for whom clothes are less a statement than an artist's palette. The kind of woman whose best accessory is her smile. Martha Redbone is that kind of woman.

Every once in a while, you hear a voice you can't forget. It's the angel whispering in your ear at the moment when you are most discouraged. It's the bird's song that flits by you, the moment when you realize that despite all your doubts and cynicism, you've once again fallen in love. It's the throaty, Bacall-like purr that is telling a very dirty, albeit very clever, joke next to you in your favorite bar. Martha Redbone has that kind of a voice.

It's not often that you hear music that sounds like it was crafted not in a studio, but at the dinner table. Music that was cooked up at a dinner party where the guests included Sly Stone and Prince, Roberta Flack and Al Green. The kind of party where Joni Mitchell stops in for a cocktail and Minnie Riperton goes straight for the dessert, something sweet. Martha Redbone makes that kind of music: not what soul music was or is, but what it will be.

The great intellectual and race man, Dr. W.E.B. DuBois, once said "the problem of the 20th century is the problem of the color line." In a world in which where there is so much focus on black and white, one might say that the problem with Martha Redbone is that she colors outside of the lines. Her caramel colored skin bespeaks a multi-racial history, but it's not the one you might expect. Her mother is Native American – Shawnee/Choctaw with a little Cherokee and Blackfeet thrown in. Her father was African American, with Native ancestry as well. You can hear it in her music, something so rare in a country so young -- heritage, roots that go back for centuries. She took her name from this heritage. "Redbone is a southern term for being black and Indian," Martha explains. "I grew up being teased and about it. Moccasins in Brooklyn! Unheard of. Now I embrace it and try to be involved in uniting red and black."

Martha Redbone grew up in New York and Kentucky. An unlikely combination that you can hear in her flow: the staccato melodies of the city, mixed with the easy, wide-open praise song of a country choir. Once an aspiring Picasso, she studied fine art before a spell living in London where she got her heart broken and decided to channel the feelings through music instead of painting. An interview with a "vampire" led to an introduction instead -- to Martha's songwriting and production partner Aaron Whitby. Redbone and Whitby have been a team ever since.

A body in motion tends to stay in motion and it's been nonstop ever since. Martha Redbone was mentored by legendary musician, Walter 'Junie' Morrison, who was an original member of the Ohio Players and later, Parliament Funkadelic. Now a sister to the funk, she sang background vocals on the Mothership reunion album with George Clinton. A period as a writer with Warner Chappell was followed by a return home to NY to be near her father who passed in 2001.

In 2002 Redbone released her debut album “Home of the Brave” independently. It went on to win Best Debut at the prestigious Native American Music Awards and receive widespread critical acclaim. A mesmerizing performer Redbone took her show on the road and has been racking up the miles playing shows all over the US building a devoted fan-base and also taking the opportunity to be ever more involved in social activism. At the same time becoming an acknowledged leader of the new wave of soul music pouring out of the underground and Martha is highly conscious of her mission – “to celebrate real soul music, music made by musicians not music made by computers manned by businessmen.”

Martha Redbone decided to title her new album Skintalk, a play on words but with a serious intent. “As Native people we call each other ‘Skins’ and I love the way we as a people communicate so I came up with Skintalk as an alternative to the mainstream norm of titillation. Skintalk means talking truthfully.”

There's joy in Martha's music, but there's a ferocious quality to the music, as well. Songs like "Hard Livin’" and "Skin" resonate with the conscious-raising, spirit-lifting melodies and lyrics, while tunes like "Future Street" and “Atlas” explore the intricacies of romance over irresistible grooves. Unabashedly old school in their tastes Martha and collaborator Whitby draw on myriad influences to find unique and fresh ways to channel soul, funk, RnB, rock, reggae, latin, jazz and traditional Native music into a vibrant 21st century art form which they call “Native Soul”. The organic, live band recording suits to a tee Martha’s down to earth manner and lifestyle, and in a reflection of Redbone’s width and reach the album is also graced by guests as diverse as the historic activist and American Indian Movement founder Dennis Banks on one of the album’s centerpiece tracks “Children of Love”, legendary trumpeter Randy Brecker and Turkish virtuoso Omar Faruk Tekbilek.

Openness is what this album is all about. This album doesn't mince words or pull punches, it's everything -- angry, painful, funny, smart, romantic, playful -- that's in Martha's heart. In the lyrics, in the beats, in the soulful, sassy timber of her voice -- there are treasures to unfold. Go ahead and drop in Skintalk. Something very special is waiting for you.

As a musician we give our time and our music as medicine, to heal, bring joy and touch lives for years to come. In stating this, a modern music medicine woman I will try to be. Please let us spend a portion of our time on community events. Most importantly, do not wait until another natural disaster strikes before we decide to do something for someone else. Remember, here at home the victims of Katrina & Rita are STILL in crisis. They STILL do not have homes, or jobs, or any means of support. Towns STILL need rebuilding along the Gulf Coast, this has not gone away in time. Darfur, the Sudan, there are states of emergency everywhere. Let us try to do all we can. Let us continue to HEAL THE NATIONS, for all people. Love Martha

World Aids Day: I am absolutely thrilled and honored to have performed on (Dec 1) at the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian in DC for the NHAP Awards Ceremony. Also at the Smithsonian, this time in NYC and performed a few songs for the Native American Film Festival Opening Night on Nov 29th. It was awesome seeing so much young Native talent on display.

Back to the Bayou, home of the UNITED HOUMA NATION where we gave a benefit concert in Sedona AZ to help towards funds for home & roof repairs in the bayous. We also presented Principal Chief Brenda Dardar Robichaux with a very special ceremonial drum as a gift to her nation's people. The drum cannot rebuild houses or renew lives but hopefully can help rebuild the spirit. This beautiful drum was made by Dennis Banks, his son Tatanka, and nephew Miguel Arrow from buffalo hide. It was then painted by renowned fine artist and friend SYNTHIA SAINT JAMES, who blessed the drum with a colorful image of the MOTHER SPIRIT OF HEALING. BIG THANKS TO CLYDE BELLECOURT for inviting us to perform with Floyd Red Crow Westerman and Red Pony for the 2nd Annual CLYDE BELLECOURT SCHOLARSHIP FUND, $130,000 was raised to send 12 outstanding Native students to college.
