Kiki Bohemia and Slow Learner deal in static laments, glacial love songs and bad memories. In their minimal sound, made up from piano loops, some effects, the odd rhythm pattern, and voices drifting through space or massing up to parade like a funeral procession, they excercise some private tribalism that references 80s pop noir, abstract Kunstlieder and Nico’s early reports from behind a mental iron curtain. Yet if the overall air resembles Nico’s collaborations with John Cale, with Nightwood the roles of female singer and male producer are reversed. Kiki Bohemia is applying the unique live looping skills of her solo performances (that saw her share stages with Dälek, Bracken, Rocko Schamoni and Jarvis Cocker) to creating homegrown epics for Slow Learner’s eulogies about love fading into betrayal to unfurl in. Slow Learner’s bleak yet affecting delivery, using simple imagery to at times chilling effect, and Kiki Bohemia’s widescreen super 8 soundscapes and occasional haunted house vocals conjure up visions of winter lost cities, hearts below zero and sojourns in permanent dawn.

Pompeii veröffentlichten kürzlich ihr neues Album "Nothing Happens For A Reason" auf Eyeball Records (Tiger Lou, An Albatross, Wolftron). Im September kommen sie nun endlich auch nach Europa. Man darf sich auf perfekt vorgetragene IndiePopSongs im Stile von Death Cab For Cutie, Moving Mountains oder Appleseed Cast freuen.
Sie haben innerhalb eines Jahres mehr Gehörgänge und Clubeinrichtungen zerstört als manch andere Band in ihrer ganzen Karriere. Und das, obwohl man dem Grand Pocket Orchestra aus Irland kein erhöhtes Aggressionspotenzial zuschreiben würde, wenn man sich nur auf den Genuss ihrer Tonträger beschränkt. Angenehmer Gänseblümchenpop im Stile von Animal Collective ist da zu hören, den auch Notwist-Mann Mario Thaler zu schätzen weiß. Er war so begeistert vom GPO, dass er sich aufmachte nach Dublin und dort Songs mit ihnen produzierte.

on their self-titled album, the terrordactyls' quirky, lighthearted yet decidedly melancholic pop/anti-folk tunes are augmented by toy pianos, kazoos, and the voice of kimya dawson (the moldy peaches, juno). despite all these charming trappings, though, nothing really serves to take the edge off the terrordactyls' gutsy interpretation of the sad sweetness (or sweet sadness) of living.

Dark and minimal while noisy and earnest, the point was to be as sparse and repetitive as possible with the help of little more than vocals, guitars, and a new drum machine. Through this, songs of earthbound captains, eggs made of gold and iron, and sleepless bodies were born. Boeckner’s disenchanted vocals thinly resonate while cloaked in a frenzied undertone of fear and uncertainty, all punctuated by bare drum machine beats. Slaraffenland expertly expands on the guitar-bass-drums standard with bras and woodwind instruments, various racket-makers, and transfixing gang vocals. Most of them childhood friends or even twins, they ve spent years developing a sound that conjures everything from tumbling jazz to noise to melodious addictive building rock and pop.
