We think it all started about ten years ago, when Amber and Erin met in the hallways of a small Montreal high school. Or maybe it started long before that when Erin looked up to her Metallica-loving older brother or when Amber jammed out cover tunes with her first band in a suburban basement. All that is really known is that the two close friends live steps away from each other and write songs together to this day. To their surprise and delight, one Jeremy MacCuish came along one day in early 2009 and joined the band thus forever altering Nightwood's trajectory, which is now pointed fixedly upon the North star of truth-spouting, feminine mystic rock.
Currently, Nightwood is putting the final touches on their as-of-yet untitled full length recording with Martin Horn of Digital Bird Studios. The record is shaping up to be an album in the true sense of the word; carefully measured and balanced sentiment, sound and stories meant to be listened to from beginning to end. The songs fit snug against each other like sailors below deck, whispering stories about life at sea, a bottle passed back and forth, adrift amidst oceanic rock and roll. The 10-song rock album will be released in vinyl and digital download formats.
In May of 2008 Nightwood released their first recording, the Big City E.P. The six song E.P. release was quickly followed up with great reviews, some fun tours and ridiculous music videos. The band has been described in a variety of ways including "happy, cocky grrrl goths," "deux filles qui ont du chien," and "Montreal’s own take on the lovely lady-smacked scene of dark, moody rock."
“Strangely familiar sultry rock music is the taste of summer, like putting little beads on the spokes of your one-speed. As you bump gently down rocky ol’ Esplanade humming throaty sex ballads to yourself, the mountain and the city and your motion suggest something cinematic, and your right brain scans quickly for an appropriate soundtrack. Maybe something fresh- like that Nightwood band- who kinda sound like happy, cocky grrrl goths. Their simple songs make you feel comfortable and the good ones make you want to sing along. Equally good for pre-drinking or 4a.m. seclusion- Big City is good music for good people. Think end credits of a nihilistic ’90s cop movie.” - Nick Cabelli, The Concordia Link, April 15, 2008
“Local long-time collaborators Erin Ross and Amber Goodwyn team up with drummer Eric Lapointe to form Nightwood: Montreal’s own take on the lovely lady-smacked scene of dark, moody rock that the now-defunct The Organ unearthed for our pleasure in 2001. Big City is a debut EP: full of promises, potential and a few minor bugs here and there that can easily be chalked up to the new experience of finally laying one’s craft down on something more tangible than a live show. The promise lies in the unaffected, sexy female vocals that intermingle over a trudging backbeat that can’t be ignored. (NV)” - Nightlife Magazine, October 2008
