Influences
Everyone whose perfomance has made me smile, cry, or think on a different level. Music continues to have a strong influence on my writing. I especially love Coltrane, Missy Elliot, Teena Marie (also a beautiful poet), the Isley Brothers, Al Green, Aretha Franklin. A few poets that I enjoy reading are Maya Angelou, Mari Evans, and Sonia Sanchez.
Sounds Like
U tell me. It's always interesting to hear one's opinion. I've been told that certain pieces bring to mind the great Lucille Clifton. Others tend to mention the fabulous Jill Scott. As the album states, I'm happy "Just Doin' Me":-D
Nikki Germany fell in love with spoken word as a freshman at Binghamton University - watching campus stars such as Kimetha and Idris blaze stages. It wasn't long before she added a concentration in creative writing to her double major. Nikki has performed at several locations throughout the Binghamton area and was invited to open/perform at Syracuse University by Tony Medina himself (poet/author of several children's books). She was also a member of Binghamton University's first playback theatre group - the Multicultural Players, led by Dr. Jane Connor.
She is the founder of Pussy Talk which originated at Binghamton University as a non-violent poetic protest against stereotypes/icons against Asian and African-descent women.
Being a western NY native, Nikki has performed at many venues throughout western NY including Hardware Cafe, Em Tea Coffee Cup, Albright-Knox Gallery, HallWalls, and Buffalo State College. She is Buffalo's 2007 Grand Slam Champion, and 2008 National team member.
Nikki has also performed at several venues in the Chicagoland area, including the Funky Buddha Lounge and Thornton High School.
Most recently, she was invited to perform at the annual Women's Conference/Gypsy Slam in Lexington, KY.
Please visit Think Twice Radio to hear her interview with Rose Salley for Ms. Salley's show "Connections."
