"Breathy and brilliant backed by swirling acoustic guitars Nila is an incredible talent the likes of which puts yer Nashes and yer Lily Allen's in their right place..."
GREAT ESCAPE FESTIVAL 08
"Nila's fluid voice and compositional ambition absorb a range of influences from Arabic folk and jazz traditions to contemporary chillout and Indian classical flavours. Always surprising and restless by nature, Nila's work is endlessly inventive and can shift seamlessly between genres and cultural traditions with an individuality devoid of fear or contrivance. "Wandering leaf" is at times reminiscent of Joni Mitchell or Led Zeppelin (check "Battle of Evermore") where the title track "Unattached to Desire" is forged from the technical drive of a fledgling Shakti. Through a voice overflowing with nimble agility, wistful innocence and grace, Nila's debut weaves a very appealing spell. Inspired."
NITIN SAWHNEY
"Nila has a talented voice followed by an innate love for different singing techniques, ranging from many cultures, which enables her to switch from one to another as she pleases. Having worked with her in the 'Aftershock' workshops, I can also add that she is very open minded and easy to work with, and that creating music with her becomes fun, as she doesn't have a problem with expanding into musical territories she might not know.."
MAX MOYA (OJOS DE BRUJO)
Nila Raja’s favourite things are sub bass, drummers with big hair, glitter paint and big shoes. So if you’re wondering what to expect from her live shows this summer that will give you some idea…
“With a voice overflowing with nimble agility, always surprising and restless by nature…” (Nitin Sawhney), Nila has transformed from an ethereal and mesmerizing goddess into a dub-esque temptress of flamenco-delic math pop. Her swirling acoustic guitars and haunting vocals have gathered grit, attitude and a little more sub bass and the Anglo-Indian beauty will be performing this new material with her newly named band, “Nila and the Rajas”
At the age of just 22, Nila is an Emerging Artist in Residence at the Southbank Centre, London where she performed her orchestral composition “Big Clouds” with the London Philharmonic Orchestra in the recent sell-out “Takeover” show in the Royal Festival Hall (Feb 09). She has also had the privilege of working with Nitin Sawhney, Mad Professor, Max Moya (Ojos de Brujo), Jason Yarde, Zoe Rahman, John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), Seb Rochford and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.
The ‘wise-beyond-her-years-songstress’ (Chic Today), is also an astounding multi-instrumentalist, playing viola, piano, Santoor, tabla and bass and has a Goldsmiths’ degree in Popular Music. As a classically trained musician and singer, Nila’s performed in an impressive array of established venues across the UK including Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, where she launched her 2008 EP: Unattached to Desire, Royal Albert Halls, Bridgewater Hall, Albany theatre, Cargo, 93 Feet East, Passing Clouds and Brighton’s answer to SWSW Great Escape (2008). She has also performed on BBC Songs of Praise, BBC Radio 4 and BBC Asian Network on the Nikki Bedi show.
Nila cites polyglot artists as inspirations including Natacha Atlas, Battles, Acoustic Ladyland, The Prodigy, SkunkAnansie and The Bad Plus. Her music represents a concotion of all these influences and as Shlomo aclaims, 'If you like lush vocals, and spooky arrangements check out Nila, she's bound for great things'.
Sorry bout spammin up your page... It's a jungle out there! :) The big, warm electro-acoustic sound of the De-Glammafy EP is finally available here Nuff Respekt Ddr
