Bio
Nils Brown, an established classical tenor from Montreal, Canada, has convincingly made his own a repertoire of songs from Naples, Venice and Sicily from 1890-1960; the songs made popular most recognizably by Enrico Caruso, Mario Lanza and Luciano Pavarotti. What makes his music distinct, is that he accompanies himself on guitar, while singing, just as the earliest Neapolitan singers did. He has formed a trio with two of Montreal's top jazz and classical musicians, filling out his sound with Jordan Officer playing alternately, mandolin, electric guitar(1957 Kay archtop) and acoustic guitar(1970,s Martin D-series), and with Andrew Horton on up-right bass. Performing at several venues in Montreal, the Nils Brown Trio were subsequently feature artists on a national broadcast on CBC Radio 2, Canada Live, during which they also collaborated on several popular numbers with their opening band, Ironico Orkestra(Bass Clarinet & Accordeon). Nils Brown learned to perform these songs on the streets of Montreal, during down-time from a busy professional career. In 2008 he brought his songs to Italy, mixing with locals, and finding out what is left of the tradition, while busking in Venice, Naples, and the islands of Capri and Ischia. There is a documentary film being produced of his time spent there. Quite simply, being in a room with Nils Brown performing these songs is a unique and overwhelming experience. He goes for the throat with their sensuality and sex-appeal, and his prodigious vocal power and control, along with well-directed passion have a very definite effect on the listening public.
