Nine Even was formed in late 2001. Their long awaited first album, Seamsan Over., was released to the public in 2008. Nine Even is now out promoting Seamsan Over., and beginning work on recording more of the music that has held their core together over the years.
It all started with Jake Modica’s desire to bring to life the musical ideas he had been working on, with other people who shared his vision of not being restricted to following the trends of the day, or taking influence from only one area or genre of music to create new things. Many influences crept into the sound he was hearing, everything from the psychedelic rants of The Smashing Pumpkins, the industrial pop of Nine Inch Nails, the menace of Tool, the light of Incubus, to the anthemic sweep of U2, the progressive tests of Opeth, the stubborn eclecticism of Faith No More, and the hooky experimentation of Radiohead. “All of these are great sounds, so why is someone not trying to bring what these musicians have done, and meld it all together with their own personality to create something new?...”, he asked.
He found kindred spirits in Chris Chard, and Mike Lauchli. Together they formed a band that immediately got an amazing response to their unique brand of heavy alternative music, which they chose to call Nine Even. Things started out great for the band, but they did not have all the pieces together yet as they wanted them. In the beginning they played mostly with more metal type bands, as a holdover from their days playing more in that genre with their previous bands. They soldiered on, bringing in fans as they went, putting the rest of the puzzle together.
In late 2006, they decided that they must record some of their catalog so the outside world would finally get the chance to hear what the regional Northern California inner circle had now been listening to for years of demos, and live performances. They decided to document all parts of the journey up to this point, early live standards (Search/SKRape/Silent Bride/Temples of Solomon/Terra Firma), crowd favorites (My Will Be Done/In the Fog/Gailleann/Gone, Compromise), and some newer songs as well (Questions/Al.Most.Fa.Mous./Bumblebea) to show what they were doing in the now. They recorded in Oakland, CA at Sharkbite Studios. During this time, a key part of the puzzle was found. Jason Avery came in to contribute his own elements to Nine Even. This brought in things the other three had been waiting for, but had now finally found.
Seamsan Over. , (Seamsan is a Gaelic word for hesitation, so the title means “hesitation over period”) was recorded, released, and the reactions have already started coming in. Many are saying they haven’t heard a band like this before. It might be because some of the elements Nine Even has brought to bear have been deleted from the charts over the years, like destructing old formulas to build something new. Maybe it’s because, like the band themselves, the songs grow onto people over time and bring up emotions from their own lives. Whatever the reasons, Nine Even are here to stay, and they continue to reach out to as many people with their music as possible.
