When I think back to how and when 99 Reasons Why formed, it’s pretty fucking hazy. I remember that somehow my band of the time ‘The Goblins’ were playing on a pretty DIY, ten band bill at the Tivoli. I asked one of the members of a band called Undertone where they got their shirts done. At that stage The Goblins only dreamt of actual band shirts. I was directed to a guy named Tim (aka Timmy Two Cents). At first I couldn’t find him, but then I got told to look for the punk as fuck looking skinny guy who was most probably passed out somewhere.
I found Tim, and awoke him from his alcohol induced snooze and asked him about shirts. All I can remember about the conversation is that to me he seemed like the coolest dude I’d ever met, he knew all of the bands I had just discovered and we talked for fucking ages and somehow agreed that we’d have a jam. I wasn’t even going to be playing guitar at that stage, I was the drummer. There was another original member of the band, but he doesn’t get a mention because we kicked him out because of his uncontrollable habit of sucking. We had a few rehearsals at the Derringer’s rehearsal rooms. Of course Timmy didn’t have a car or a license so I’d pick him up each time (take into account that I was 18 and he was 28, and it took him until after the band had broken up until he actually got his ‘L’s’). I could play the drums, but I had the stamina of a 14 year old schoolboy when he finds his first ever porno. So in comes James Stout (Jimbo Jones).
He was apparently our new drummer. He rocked up to the first jam wearing cut off army shorts, an Exploited shirt and pink dreads. He had a rad kit, sadly but couldn’t play a beat. But in retrospect that was the style of the band. None of us could play for shit, but we fucking loved it. And at that stage, Timmy was drinking light beer. True Story.
99 Reasons was born.
We grew.
We lived.
We loved.
We changed.
We died.
Don’t worry there’ll be more. It’s just that it’s 2am.
Alright, it's only been about a year between updates....
We practiced about 5 or six times before our first show. There were no pop punk (don't cringe, it was awesome back then, I mean in the same vein as Propagandhi (a really tiny vein)). Someone in the band knew someone who turned out to be a huge supporter of the band, giving us about a million shows, and being an awesome guy at the same (much respect Pete you retard). It was Pete The Stud, and yes he has a surname, but his name is Pete The Stud so fuck off if you can't handle it. His parents ran the most awesome venue, completely dedicated to all genres of music, as long as it was either, punk, extremely punk, or his band, The Blood Sucking Freaks. Pete did the majority of the Sucking part, it was called The Abbadon (referring to hell).
Anyway, this venue was like something you'd expect to see in a documentary featuring the first the first places bands like Black Flag, DRI, Minor Threat (without the massively and stricltly enforced 'drink until you can't play properly' policy). It was dark, small, dinghy and awesome. Our first show was with The Ghouls, The Needle Faeries and probably Pete's band. We sucked ass, we were still a four piece at the time, James and Timmy 2c were written off, and I was just scared shitless. But we played a few songs and people liked them (thanks Mara, Travis, Whitehead and Pete Stud, and whoever else clapped). Back in 1996, getting abused by the audience or having beer and other things thrown at you was a sign of respect... well really having beer all over your equipment was a bit disreapectful, but back then disrespect denoted respect. So we didn't quit. Ok enough. Peace. Sam.
Ok. Thanks for the update Sammy. Just want to clear up one thing. Our first show went off. We played well & it was brilliant. Our second show we sucked ass & continued for a few after that. Remember The Porkers show on a sunday? Real real bad. Oh well. Nice update & if my calculations are correct you should have a fully comprehensive history of the band up by 2025. LOL
cheers for the add and all the killer shows.... it's been a few years now, have you guy's considered going spice girl and cranking out a one off reformation?? A-town punk needs it dudes!
Ha ha ha at the youtube vids. Like 2nd or 3rd show thinks. Wonder if kallinowski is a star yet? lol Will try to find the disc of the last show & put it up.
Hello dudes, nice to hear these tunes again. Put sheep up, w/ Timmy doin' backups pls!
Apart from all that, how's Radelaide these days?
I'm in Sydney, studying for my BTeach/MTeach degree so I can teach English and show these stupid kids how it's done heehee. Seriously, though - nah, I am serious.
Write me back, tell me what you're all up to these days.
Can i get my hands on some old recordings? i don't have a cassette tape player at the moment, and I'm not expecting to get one either. So cd would be great or whatever. make it happen fag.
