With a vision that borders on myopic, Nixon's Head continues to bust through the nooks and crannies of the 3-minute pop song with a sound the Camden Courier-Post characterized as "The Standells meet Squeeze." The band paved its own way onto the Philadelphia underground scene in 1986 with the self-produced EP The Doug Factor… Another EP; a single; and many raised, beer-soaked fists followed until the usual suspects ground operations to a halt in 1991. Since reforming in 1998, these Philadelphia torchbearers for garage-pop have released 2 CDs, Gourmet and Take It!, and appeared on numerous comps. A new album of darker material is in the works.

Not just another genre, folk rock was born as a statement—of purpose, of taste, of superiority—the baby boom’s first imprimatur, a musical mission and a personal battle cry in a divisive time of racial tension and escalating war. For a generation of philosopher dropouts and drug-inspired visionaries, it was also the best way to partake in the era’s hippest form of artistic expression, in numbers previously unknown to man.

In seeking out some tracks and an entire album by Jefferson Airplane last night, I came across an album by another SF band I'd always heard about but never heard, Sons of Champlin. The album I stumbled across is called Follow Your Heart. After checking it out last night, I'm tempted to say that I've finally found a SF band I can sink my teeth into: really soulful singing, nice ensemble playing,
little of the melodrama that has always bogged me down with Jefferson Airplane. Along with the title track, I was impressed by "Children Know", "Before You Righ Now", "Hey Children", and "Child Continued". Anything else worth checking out by this band?
Hello! Anyone who knows "The Claw" has to be one of the best bands! Thanks for stopping by, and better yet, thanks for being a friend! I like the tunes!
Hey! I remember it like it was yesterday....playing at that club in Philly (what was the name of that place?) with the cute club owner (what was her name?) and that great beer (Penn something...it came in a bottle).
Many great gigs with Nixon's and the Dipper. Glad to hear you are still treading the boards. If you ever make it to Walla Walla look me up.
