Vedat's Blurbs |
About me:
I was born in Istanbul in 1973 on a cold October night.
So my Astrological sign happened to be Libra, thank God for that.( or whoever is responsible for such things)
I grew up in a small neighbourhood between Sureyyaplaji and Adatepe, in Istanbul.
My education started in the neigborhood school Nazmi Duhani. Due to my promising IQ level, I was transferred to a more advanced school on 5th grade: Ozel Kalamis. There, I experienced intense competition and preparation for the upcoming placement exams. As a result I was successful in getting admitted to the highly acclaimed Kadikoy Anadolu Lisesi, a 7 year high school specialized in English education. In my high school years I built a deep interest in electronics. I transformed my room into an electronics lab. I became a borderline nerd. My love for BMXing saved me, I guess.
After my brain was numbed by the superb (!) educational system, I was admitted - after another placement exam - to Istanbul University to study economics for no apparent reason. However I took this opportunity as an excuse to express myself constructively, and started a band which I had been planning for a while then. From 1991 to 1995 were the years in which I had learned to play guitar, started one of the first Turkish Hard Core Punk bands, namely Ask it Why, played gigs, and recorded 2 albums.(one of them was officially released as the first Hard core album in Turkey)
In 1995 I visited my brother in New York for a few months. This visit broadened my vision on what I could be doing for the rest of my life (kind of). So next year I came back to NYC to sign up to the "Institute of Audio Research" to study audio engineering and production. Upon my graduation in '98, I landed an internship at Fastlane Studios in Brooklyn where I was involved in recording mostly local bands. Some of the bands I have assisted Mike Ferrara engineering are Biohazard, KMFDM, Merauder, Crackdown, and Keith Caputo (of Life of Agony). Fastlane was an alternative education in recording music in which nothing went on how it should :). This year was also the year I joined my first NYC band playing bass. It was an unfortunate choice, however it was the first
band I got to engineer and mix totally by myself. My first steps in Music Business. (later on we were produced by Jared Kotler, who had produced Marcy Playground's 'Sex and Candy', then I quit the band)
In 1999 I started working at Ultrasound Studios, assisting bands for their rehearsals. This was a place where I met musicians and talked them into producing their demos, later on their albums. I have never advertised either commercially or thru flyers. I only contacted bands that I'd have liked to work with.
At Ultrasound I'd set up and mix local, national as well as international acts such as -in no particular order- Wilson Pickett, Craig Harris, Blue Oyster Cult, H2O, Nuclear Assault, New Found Glory, Marky Ramone, Daphne Rubin Vega, Phoebe Snow, Madball, Skarface, Lou Marini (of Blues Brothers), Uptown Horns, Harlem Gospel Choir, Marlon Graves, Lil Kim, Mandy Moore, Alex Skolnick, Saul Williams, Simone, Evan Seinfeld, Brooklyn Funk Essentials, Richard Bona, and many many others which their names I can't remember.
Also in '99 I started another school, Borough of Manhattan Community College, of City University of New York. There I studied Video Production and Editing. I did few projects there on both analog and digital mediums such as Beta, 3/4", and AVID. My editing project, a video collage, won the first prize in 2000 Annual BMCC Film and Video Festival. I also got an internship through BMCC at NY1, a Time Warner Local News Channel. I edited numerous news packages for air. At BMCC I did a secondary degree in Multimedia Programming.(another intership at Blink Digital, a DVD production house) I started taking photography seriously around this time after meeting my photography professor, Shawn Walker.
In between all this I have managed to produce demos and records.
In 2003 I reconnected with my passion for electronics, and delved into Audio Electronics. I have built clones of Urei 1176, and SSL Mix Bus Compressor, very famous classic audio gear, as well as other projects in which I restored gear from the 60's. This was meant to be only for myself, however news travelled fast and I ended up building gear for Tony Visconti himself, Morgan Visconti at Human World Wide, Pete Keppler (David Bowie FOH) and Kieran Kelly at Blue House Sound.
In 2004 I moved to New Zealand with my wife and now we live in Auckland. I work for a post production studio called Auckland Audio. We do sound design for mainly TV programs, commercials, shorts, and some music. In the meantime despite the distance and thanks to technology I am still the trusted mixing engineer for the NYC band Kervin. I am also one of the moderators of Turkish Music and Sound Technology Portal Muziktek.
