General
books, island countries (Japan, Great Britain, Iceland, New Zealand), girls (and women) who wear glasses, karaoke, drums, radical humanism, chess, kite-flying, writing, astronomy, comics, movies, American sign language, guitar, travel, crackpot ideologies...
Music
The late, great Versus is the best band you've likely never heard of. +/-, Devo, Pixies, Hoover, Rodan, Fugazi, Neko Case, Sleater-Kinney, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Talking Heads, Radiohead and David Bowie are in regular rotation...
Less often: Jesus Lizard, Skinny Puppy, Past Lives, Queen, Velvet Underground, Hedwig and the Angry Inch. By the way, the Dead Science will kick your ass and break your heart.
Movies
It really all starts and ends with Hitchcock, but I'm also down for the Coen Brothers (at least, up to The Big Lebowski...that LadyKillers flick was just horrid!), and Wes Anderson flicks as well (yay Bottle Rocket!). Give me Parker Posey, Mary Louise Parker, or Maggie Gyllenhaal, you've got yourself one happy bookworm...though Ms. Posey has been slipping of late.
Particular Flicks? Secretary, Tampopo, Lost in Translation, North by Northwest, Saboteur (a Hitchcock movie co-written by Dorothy Parker? Madness!), Fargo, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Donnie Darko ("I'm really starting to doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion!"), Memento, Waiting for Guffman, Bottle Rocket, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Brokeback Mountain, Fight Club, A Woman Under the Influence...Believe it or not, the John Hughes flick Some Kind of Wonderful is one of two reasons I became a drummer. (If you ask nicely, perhaps I'll tell you the other...)
As God is my witness, DO NOT see the movie version of V for Vendetta! Read the graphic novel, you slacker.
Television
in moderation, please. Rick Steves' Europe is like mother's milk to me. Also the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, and Sunday morning news pundit shows.
Books
rock my world! Go read Irving Stone's Lust for Life right now, if you haven't. Other faves includes Our Band Could Be Your Life (Michael Azerrad), Sister Outsider (Audre Lorde), The Unbearable Lightness of Being (Kundera), Wind-Up Bird Chronicle (Murakami), Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents (Octavia Butler), The Sins of Scripture (Spong), Lies My Teacher Told Me (Loewen), Guns Germs and Steel (Diamond), Invisible Man (Ellison), The European Dream (Rifkin), Watchmen (Moore/Gibbons) and V for Vendetta (Moore/Lloyd), Only Begotten Daughter (Morrow)...
General authors -- Haruki Murakami, Octavia Butler, Jeanette Winterson, Banana Yoshimoto, Robert Heinlein, Ishmael Reed, Kurt Vonnegut, John A. Williams, Thomas Pynchon...ok, I'll stop there.
Heroes
invariably disappoint you. My mom rocks, however.
