What do science and technology have to do with "beauty"?
Why is it even important?
And if you're a guy, what does any of this have to do with you? You may especially feel that this industry is "for ladies only". At one time it was.
Salons & Day Spas today are far removed from the "old days" for both men and women.
Let me explain.
Our Owner and Director is Karen. Karen is also my mother.
She started school for cosmetology when she was 14, and obtained her license when she was still in High School.
She was in her 20's when she opened her first salon, nearly 40 years ago.
I was in grade school, and had 2 younger sisters. I remember a lot about those years, but 2 things stuck with me the most. First was the admonition "If you spin in that chair one more time...." (Show me a kid who can resist spinning in a salon chair and grabbing the stop bar with a foot, and I'll show you a kid who doesn't like amusement park rides!)
Second was my mother obtaining a new gadget called a Hair Analysis machine. I was a born "geek" so I was fascinated with a machine that you put a strand of hair in and saw the cuticle "scales". It analyzed the health of the hair from inside out. (Think of CSI, forensic analysis and all that "cool", geeky, science stuff.) I was hooked.
This machine was much more than a simple microscope & hair analyzer. It allowed my mother's salon to tell a client exactly what was damaged and what was healthy. This technology allowed her to personalize the services and products that her clients needed. The salon itself was evolving into a personalized experience for every person who came in.
I left my sisters playing on the chairs (when they could get away with it), and started paying attention to the science of what my mother did at her salon.
In the late 70's and early 80's there were a lot of changes in the Beauty Industry as science became a part of the equation. Revolutions in chemistry made salon products far superior to what was found on store shelves. Cosmetology
students were learning much more than their Beauty School predecessors.
Science led to better tools and exciting new techniques in style and design. Advances in chemistry made color, perm solutions, and many new treatments for all types of hair and their unique issues, available, safer and actually promoted the health of hair.
Blue rinses were out, and the Art and Science of healthy hair was born. Science met Beauty and hasn't looked back.
Years later another major shift occurred. As science progressed in the lab, a deeper understanding of skin & skin problems came along. Sun damage, skin aging, and skin conditions were now understood. People became aware. Now there were real answers & real solutions.
Aestheticians became a necessary part of caring for clients.
Massotherapy also became recognized as not only a terrific stress reliever, but a genuine benefit to circulation, healing, and relief for many muscle and nerve conditions.
Combining these disciplines (Cosmetology, Aesthetics, and Massotherapy) became the facility you know as a Salon & Day Spa today. Hair, Skin, and Body.
Men have discovered what women have known for a long time: Taking care of your body pays. Men now understand the things that damage a woman's skin also damages theirs. Everybody ages.
I know guys do care about how they look, no matter what they say. I have a 20 year old son who "borrows" my styling products. He is just as concerned with how his face looks as I am and wants healthy skin too. His job and hobbies make his muscles ache from time to time. He spends a lot of time on his feet, and a pedicure is a relaxing way to have that foot and lower leg pain relieved.
( I have yet to figure out a way to drag him in for that. You'll be the first to know when I do :D)
Manicures aren't just for ladies either. Massaging the hands and lower arms is highly relaxing. Softening & removing callouses from your hard working hands is appreciated the by skin your hands touch too.
(I know, because his girlfriend told me he needed that. More information than I needed, thank you. But I digress :D )
Now another exciting revolution is happening:
MedSpa services.
Treatments that were only available in medical facilities are now available in a medically supervised Day Spa setting.
These services are performed by a Registered Nurse Practitioner, Licensed Aesthetician or Physician, depending on licensing requirements for the service you choose. Science meets our industry yet again.
Men hate to shave as much, if not more than, women do.
It's a hassle, can be painful, and is very hard on the skin.
Laser hair reduction is something men are thrilled about.
Finally, a solution for unwanted back hair as well.
Men in their 30's and older are now concerned about having healthy, younger looking skin too. Nobody wants to look 10 years older than they really are. MedSpa services are definitely not "for ladies only".
We are all exposed to the same sun and pollutants. Stress, diet, and aging affect men and women both. Men are actually at a *disadvantage* because women's products, from make-up to moisturizers, have SPF in nearly everything.
Men get sun spots, acne scars, age spots.....
Photofacials, Peels, Botox and Restylane are just as effective for the concerns both younger and older men have as they are for women.
We all get muscle and nerve problems that are relieved with massotherapy. And I have yet to meet a person who says they don't need time to get away and relax. Really relax in quiet place.
Guys, we aren't going to put you in a pair of fuzzy slippers and set you in the middle of the ladies with a mud pack on your face. Unless you ask, that is :D
Treatment rooms are private and every client's comfort is important to us.
My mother Karen's "mission" and dream in opening Nicole Jeffrey's Salon & Day Spa was this:
1.To again offer the best of what science has to offer in products for hair and skin used in the services we provide and what you can take home.
2.To make available to average people the latest in the real benefits of hair,skin, and body care services
3.To offer the most updated techniques in those services
4.To have truly caring, highly educated, and motivated Salon & Day Spa professionals
5.To deliver it all with the highest principles practiced in customer service.
She also wanted to provide a relaxing, laid back environment
where men and women did not feel "processed" in and out;
where they felt welcome and appreciated.
