Originally from New Orleans, Louisiana, Nicole LeCorgne is a percussionist, photographer and ethnomusicologist specializing in music of the Middle East. She has performed and taught workshops throughout the US and internationally. Nicole began her musical and academic training in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she received a B.A. in World Music and Dance from the University of Minnesota, and worked extensively with renowned Oriental dancer Cassandra Shore and the Jawaahir Dance Company. She also has a Masters Degree in Ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University. In 1995 she moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where she had the opportunity to work with Susu Pampanin, The Aswan Dancers, Slavko Silic, and several other local Middle Eastern and Balkan ensembles. Nicole spent over four years performing across the country as a core member of The Georges Lammam Ensemble. She is a founding member of the Balkan gypsy ensemble, Panacea and all female Arabic music group Al-Hawanim. Nicole has been the musical accompanist and resident drum teacher at Oasis Dance Camps for the past ten years. In addition to maintaining a full travel schedule, Nicole performs and teaches throughout the East Coast area, and has given workshops and lecture demonstrations William and Mary College, Brown and Harvard universities. She has been awarded Fulbright funding to work on a photodocumentary project and study music in Cairo from September 2008-September 2009. Before accepting Fulbright funding she was is a full-time member of Sounds of Taraab, Zikrayat, Alhambra. Nicole is currently preparing for her year abroad, and finishing a book on the teachings of Michel Merhej Baklouk, life-long percussionist for the legendary Lebanese singer Fairuz.
