This is the Myspace headquarters for the Americans for Hemp Campaign New Mexico.
The Americans for Hemp Campaign is a national grassroots movement supporting HR 3037, the Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2005. (go to http://thomas.loc.gov and either do a search on HR 3037 or keyword "hemp" to see the full bill). Unfortunately, the bill died in committee but this New Mexico chapter is going strong and will continue to fight for industrial hemp. Hopefully another bill will be introduced soon.
Hemp is a miracle plant. It can make about 25,000 products including paper, fuel, cosmetics, building materials, cleaning materials, textiles, and plastics. Industrial hemp contains negligable to no THC molecules (a THC concentration of 0.3% or less). But because it is a cousin of the marijuana plant, it is labeled as a "drug" under the Controlled Substances Act. HR 3037, if passed, will amend to the Controlled Substances Act to exclude industrial hemp as a controlled substance and will then make industrial hemp available to be grown within the United States.
What will it mean for the country if industrial hemp returns to the farms? As it stands, the United States is the number one importer of hemp. That is 250 million dollars that coule be kept inside our borders. Also, if hemp were to be allowed to grow again, it would give farmers the opportunity to grow a very successful and profitable crop. The United States could be the fore-runner of using hemp as fuel for automobiles, and lessen the dependence on foreign petroleum.
Hemp is part of American history. Our first flag was made out of hemp fabric, and our Constituion was written on hemp paper. Many of the forefathers of this country counted on their own hemp crop. Industrial hemp was allowed to grow during World War Two for its superior strength as canvas and rope.
And just so you know, there is one company that can be blamed for the ban of hemp and marijuana: Du Pont
In New Mexico, hemp can be utilized to further the renewable energy industry.
