say NO to nuclear 's Interests

| General | Nuclear waste is a big issue. It includes clothing, buildings and Fuels rods, which are the most dangerous. Where is the government planning on putting this toxic waste? Their (ahem) "solution" is to bury it in the outback.
But - what happens when they run out of space?
One typical reactor produces 20-30 tonnes of radioactive waste a year. Plutonium-239 will remain dangerous for 10,000 years and radioactive for 240,000 years.
But the thing is, no-one really knows the full extent of the effects of this waste on the environment, animals and humans. No-one has found a completely safe disposal method for it. NO-ONE. So why keep using it?
Nuclear plants need MILLIONS of litres of water to operate. With Australia's current water crisis this is not a sustainable option. When the Government of this country is already considering the use of recycled water for drinking purposes, how can the use of millions of litres of our water be a viable option? Some plants use 108 MILLION Litres of water an HOUR. In France, one plant will use 270,000m3 of water a year.

About me:
Chernobyl, 1986. After the meltdown approximately 8.4 million are subjected to radiation exposure. 150,000 square km are contaminated and 52,000 square km of farmland are contaminated and unusable for centuries to come. From that date there has been 6,000 deaths and a massive increase in the diagnosis of thyroid cancer. In 2003 on the 1st of January, a report was released stating that 100,000 individuals suffer a disability linked to the Chernobyl disaster.
And now there are talks of nuclear power plants to be built in Australia with those at the wheel completely ignoring other manageable and cleaner sources of renewable energy.
Do you really want to take the risk of having a nuclear power plant? Fight to use renewable energy and not damage the earth any more than we already have.
TAKE ACTION!
The Wilderness Society of Australia have started a petition online in opposition to nuclear power in Australia. It can be found here:

Urge the ALP to change their stance on uranium mining in Australia by sending a letter to the party through the Friends Of The Earth website. The page can be found here:

Contact Peter Garrett to ask him to lend his support to the cause. He has already spoken out against nuclear power in Australia, both in a political forum and in his work with Midnight Oil. His site can be found here:

Who I'd like to meet:
Those who are against the construction of these plants by money hungry millionaires who don't care what happens to the planet. People who care and WILL stand up and be heard.
