I was fortunate to be asked to play on Noah’s first recording for Entour, entitled Where We Are. If you haven’t heard it, it’s an interesting contrast to the project you are listening to now.................................................................................
Noah is on tenor, and actually has a very introspective approach to his improvisations. Also, the project is all original music. We were blessed to have the rising jazz star Kurt Rosenwinkle add his original guitar sound to this project. It’s a beautiful and honest recording that , like many jazz CDs now, did not get proper acclaim...................................................................................
I was pleasantly surprised to hear Noah playing the alto saxophone on this recording! I think that tenor has overshadowed the alto since the rise of Trane and Brecker. But I have become a fan of the modern alto concept. I have been fortunate to play with many great altoist, including Gary Bartz,Lee Konitz,Phil Woods,Charles McPherson, Steve Coleman,
Myron Walden, Kenny Garrett,Steve Wilson, etc.. And I’m adding Noah to the list of my favorite altoists. You can hear that Noah has a very solid tone quality and intonation, and is consistent and clean while still being able to be expressive and colorful when presenting a melody. I hear shades of Konitz, inescapable tips of the hat to Bird, and connotations of Cannonball. Like his painting, he plays with an equal combination of mastery and sentiment....................................................................................................
Speaking of great artists in exile, I would be neglectful if I did not mention the other musicians presented here,starting with Terry Deane on tenor saxophone. Terry was also in New York in the late 90’s. I think Terry was poised to become the next great Tenor player in New York. Problem was, he didn’t seem to own a tenor to practice on! Terry is one of those geniuses that will master any discipline or interest simply because he can, not because he really cares about impressing anyone. When Terry left New York, he had actually become saxophone repairman of choice for every jazz saxophonist in New York.
This album is just a peek into Terry’s under appreciated saxophone brilliance. I think he and Noah blend very well together here.
