Forget frivolous hippy music. Abandon hopes of a post-modern “Kumbaya.” You can smile on your brother, but a little glower on your face couldn't hurt. Emotionally, the work of Noah Gokey might have more in common with the murder ballads of old than Woodstock. Self-described purveyor of “dark folk,” Gokey's work finds a shadow realm in the gentle, roots-based world of folk. Offering up music that is compelling in exactly the way good folk should be but with a dark yet anything but self-important attitude that stands among the works of the elite.
Metaphysics
Music is metaphysical for Gokey. But don't anticipate any “oh, wow, man” pop-philosophizing while the mushrooms make all the colors so pretty. No, this is a realm of soul psychedelics that offers a sucker punch to the unsuspecting fluff-seeker while offering a wry and sublime tongue-in-cheek look at life and its rough edges. “Music makes me feel connected to the rhythms and melodies of the natural universe and the driving natural force within one's self.” This is music that truly confronts what it means to be human, facing the shadow but doing it with a smile its face.
Defiance and Provocation
While Gokey's music is ultimately rooted in a classic sound, this is a neo-folk expression and not quite like anything heard before. “I strive to create unique and original sounds and songs that defy labels and provoke thought about the world.” And his defiance of categorical labels is likely to bring a flurry of record labels to his door. Originality is the lifeblood and heartbeat of the music industry – it is the distinct artists that keep music on a track of growth and set the standard for what great songwriting really is. “I am inspired by the processed and redundant nature of the music industry today, which I hope to contradict with my musical style.”
The Artist at Work
Gokey's devotion to music is proven by his busy schedule. Besides his stunning solo work, he is also the front man for a number of other projects. Plans for a new album are in the work and writing and recording continues unabated. He is currently working with A&R Select, the leading indie A&R firm in Hollywood, CA.
Review
“What can you say about music that defies description? The only words to be spoken are a command to seek out the works of Gokey and embrace them.” - A&R Select
Thank you so much for the compliment =) I actually am very interested in doing some orignal projects, I've been trying to get some of my lyrics together with some great music and working towards getting some orginals out there but it's difficult to do since I don't play an instrument...
Thank you for the detailed comment Noah. We're not a band to jump at the defense of our music and what we believe in, so we will endeavour to take your words onboard and immensely appreciate you taking the time out to listen to them.
William Noah Gokey was the first to combine the Native American moccasin style of construction with the European hard sole. His shoes cradles the foot with a piece of leather that was stitched at the toe of the shoe. In the early 1900s his factory was located in Jamestown, N.Y., but in 1971 it employed nine shoemakers and had both a store and a mail order company located in St. Paul.
Thank you for the add!! I really like your sound. We have our new 11 track recording available on our page for download and it is free. Check it out if you want. Best wishes!!
