Movies That time when the movie version of Rent, the multibillion-dollar grossing Broadway commodity about downtown New York, was being filmed on 6th Street, San Francisco's skid row -- now also home to several different kinds of hipster bars -- the entire block was commandeered by guys in headsets looking important, extras looking clueless, and at least three different types of cops: SFPD officers, rent-a-cops, and actors playing NYPD officers. There was fake snow on the ground, and there were rainbow feather boas wrapped around parking meters.

Who the hell is Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore?

The Austin Chronicle calls Mattilda "a cross between Tinkerbell and a honky Malcolm X with a queer agenda." The San Francisco Chronicle calls her "a gay provocateur." And BUTT Magazine calls her "ONE OF THE HUNDRED MOST INTERESTING PEOPLE ON EARTH."

The San Francisco Bay Guardian says Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore "kicks mainstream lit in the teeth," and Radical History Review says "Mattilda never backs down from a fight." But she also loves intimate conversations, so try her, okay?

Oh, but you want more information?

Mattilda's new novel, So Many Ways to Sleep Badly, has arrived in the world, yes your world -- order it here!

Here's what people are saying about So Many Ways to Sleep Badly:

"Profane meanderings..."
-- Publishers Weekly

"Unearths subjects still relatively untouched in popular culture... You're not going to be reading anything similar elsewhere."
-- Times of London

"Mattilda's brilliance makes stream-of-consciousness a lifestyle, a state-of-consciousness. This is an entire lived life's worth of heartshaking honesty, arch observation, searing vulnerabilty and craving and seeking, all in one breathtakingly poetic (and hilarious) book."
—Michelle Tea

"So Many Ways to Sleep Badly is a perfectly tidy mess, a ‘Sex in the Other City’—only these sexual escapades and flailing urges are truly transgressive and flamboyantly hilarious at every turn… This refreshingly frenetic and innovative second novel is unabashedly political, but without being formulaic or reductive. It is a book that has done nothing less than invent its own language.”
—T Cooper

"Like the best writers that have come before — David Wojnarowicz, Lou Reed, William S. Burroughs — Sycamore has boiled life and times down to a resin that you could almost grind, cut up and snort. There is no one else on this planet that could write this book. Dare I say it's a classic? Yes, and I dare you to read it."
—Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters

"Reading a chapter of this amazing book is like when someone throws you into the deep end and you don’t know how to swim. . . . You breathe in this new element—this frantic, fluid prose—and read like you have never read before."
—Rebecca Brown

"In 1955, City Lights published Allen Ginsberg’s Howl, an attack on the conformity and the alienation of that era. Now here’s another great paean to a counterculture of hustlers, junkies and visionary angels to wash the taste of the Bush years out of our mouths."
—Robert Glück

Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore is a writer, editor, activist, critic and troublemaker. Most recently, she is the editor of an expanded second edition of That’s Revolting! Queer Strategies for Resisting Assimilation (Soft Skull 2008) and Nobody Passes: Rejecting the Rules of Gender and Conformity (Seal 2007).

Mattilda's first novel is Pulling Taffy (Suspect Thoughts 2003), and she also edited Dangerous Families: Queer Writing on Surviving (Haworth 2004) and Tricks and Treats: Sex Workers Write about Their Clients (Haworth 2000), which now also appears in Italian (Effepi Libri 2007).

Mattilda’s articles, essays, interviews, reviews, and stories appear regularly in a variety of publications, including the San Francisco Bay Guardian, AlterNet, Bitch, Utne Reader, Bookslut, and she writes a monthly column in Maximumrocknroll.

Mattilda is the reviews editor at the feminist magazine Make/shift, where she also writes a column.

Mattilda’s direct action activism has included ACT UP in the early ‘90s, Fed Up Queers in the late ‘90s, Gay Shame, and numerous lesser-known (or even unnamed) groups.

NEW BOOK OUT NOW:
Chthonic - Prose & Theory
by Vadge Moore

"Vadge Moore is an American author and musician that has spent a lifetime testing the boundaries of good and evil. He toured and recorded with the infamous sleaze-punk institution The Dwarves, apocalyptic rock group Neither-Neither World, and his own nihilist-noise unit Chthonic Force. He has written for the early nineties occult journal Primal Chaos, the esoteric magazine Dagobert's Revenge, and the controversial web 'zine Synthesis. Recently Vadge has taken up an aphoristic-prose style of writing that best expresses his iniquitous and sinister insights into the mind of Man. Chthonic: Prose & Theory is just that; prose wedded to theory that scrutinizes the human, all too human, Monster that is Man."
"Chthonic: Prose & Theory" is a collection of perverse and violent prose wedded to his own brand of occult esoterica. Peer into the mind of one of America's greatest living libertines.

"You have no idea how horrific is the existence of the girl who is that insecure with herself—that doubting of her her basic feminine worth. It’s like being covered with bees and nobody knows they’re on you but you. So anytime those smoldering, deep-set blue eyes of yours wandered wantonly in the direction of another, I knew. I knew like you know when a razorblade is pulling your skin apart. Heat. Fire. I was just so goddamned sick of being ignored—replaced with a look. So when you looked at her and her and her like that, the bees started to swarm. And I was gonna get even with you even if I didn’t really mean to. Make sense? Inferiority is a bitch like that."

FTM Book Vol. 1 = OUT NOW!!!!!

About FTM Book Vol. 1
FTM Book Vol 1: A Basic Introduction to Transman Life is an easy-to-understand, yet comprehensive primer on FTM issues such as:

What is an FTM?
How do FTMs see themselves?
Appearance
Stages in Transition
Surgeries Available
Common Personal Histories
Violence
Discrimination
Health Issues
Counseling
Relationships
Common Legal Issues

We've worked hard to help create definitions that will help you talk about trans issues with others, including terms for body parts unique to the FTM and by naming the stages of transitioning. This book is great for anyone who who is having trouble understanding the lifestyle or choices of a transperson. When we first began dating, we were shocked that there was no one place that he (Aaron) could turn to show me (Crystal) "See, this explains what being an FTM means." We hope that this book will be a good start.

Best of all, when you order FTM Book Vol. 1: A Basic Introduction to Transman Life you can feel good knowing that sales of the book are being used to fund more research to help FTMs and their partners get through the challenges of their lives. This is a great book for youself and for anyone you know who could use a little more understanding. Also, you can help teach others about trans issues by donating copies to your local high schools, colleges, LGBT centers and libraries.

Get your copy here: http://www.cafepress.com/muskegon115

FTM Book Vol. 2 is also in the works (more focus on relationship issues etc), as well as a few other things to be announced...

Dear honest Mattilda,

as I've read your circumcision on just 'Revolting assimilation' - I must give my props to your extended work and hopeful I penile the 'this' leave us as to whether chaos in indset to love language skillz to 'this' should be considered Radical Queer science in post-fascist Europe? I will argue in what follows that chaos in radical presumptions does have parallels to literature and postmodernism and can be considered postmodern science in a qualified or limited way.
I agree with you on this point and disagree with mass hysteria about prevalent deploy of my/your MySpace:)

The Smoking Poet Launches Winter 2008-09 Issue!

A great poem does things to you. Divine and nearly frightening things, like knotting up something inside you, or making your heart slip into an erratic beat, or catching your breath, or causing tremors, fevers, daydreams, sweats, inexplicable bliss.

Congratulations to the winners of TSP’s Annual Poetry Contest!

First Prize: “Northward” by Koh Xin Tian

Second Prize: “Sock Puppet” by Malcolm R. Campbell

Third Prize: “Reunion: 30 Years Too Late” by Lana Maht Wiggins

Honorable Mention: ”Selected Love Letters I’m Still Trying to Write” Kelli Russell Agondon

A special thank you to our honorary judge, poet Dorianne Laux.

Enjoy great poetry, fiction, non-fiction, book reviews, cigar reviews, and an interview with our feature artist, Sue Hughes. Watch for a new call for submissions, including our second short story contest.
