The mercurial and improvisatory Careful of the
Drifting was born out of a failed attempt
to construct a fusion jazz quartet and begun as the
Mumbo Jumbo Duo in the
summer of 2006.
Carful of the Drifting is percussionist Joe Seltzer
and guitarist Michelle Webb.
Joe Seltzer (Drums, Percussion, Synth Triggering) The
27 year old New Mexico born
drummer pushes into new territory of harmonic drumming
by expanding on the influence
from percussion preachers. Joe melds steady pulsations
and harmonic
textures in tandem with the pure resonance and power
of acoustic drums. His interest in
styles of percussing worldwide –from Ghanaian drum
ensembles to Balinese Gamelan to
Cuban and Latin American flavors to the American
drummers like those of Frank Zappa,
Miles Davis, and Albert Ayler.
Michelle Webb is recognized as a incredibly creative
and innovative guitarists, improviser,
and producer in the fields of jazz and experimental
music, a most versatile, imaginative and
original guitarists.
Combining breathtaking technique with musical
intelligence, Webb displays a mastery of
guitar expression that encompasses delicate lyricism,
sonic abstractions,
and skull-crunching noise. Born in Jersey City, New
Jersey on the 23rd of March 1973,
Michelle Webb has helped unfetter the guitar from the
conventions of genre-bound
techniques, but her instrumental virtuosity and
technological breakthroughs are always
deployed in the service of deep and immediate personal
expression.
Likewise, she has developed a highly individual style
from an uncommonly
varied range of influences.
Careful of the Drifting weave improvisatory
compositions -often times redolent of
the Nels Cline Trio or the Ornette Coleman Quartet --
with subtle electronics and
moody atmospheric soundscapes.
