Zach Bair & No Control. Several cities. More than several musicians. Many fans. Not enough recordings… all of this describes a dynamic rock band that was originally formed in 1991, in Houston, TX, by vocalist and songwriter Zach Bair. Now in the band’s 17th year of existence, Bair is the only remaining original band member, and has regrouped with new musicians to introduce updated material and long-awaited new original songs to its catalog.
Zach Bair and No Control is much more than a cover band – original songs have always played a major role; however, the band determined very early that one of the best ways to introduce new, radio-friendly material was to break it during “cover” performances. In fact, people have been known to come up to band members and ask the question: “That was an awesome song! I have heard it before, who does it?” The answer? “Zach Bair and No Control – ORIGINAL.”
Over the years, No Control has had varying degrees of success – usually only stopping and having to retool because internal strife didn’t allow the band to continue; or because of geographical changes.
Zach and the band have:
• headlined at events such as Z-Rock’s Spring Break in
Galveston in the early 90’s;
• appeared on live radio for now-defunct Dallas’ Q102;
• been included in a radio compilations for the same station;
• enjoyed airplay on several stations in the Dallas market;
• been invited to perform at major radio station
events including Dallas’ 93.3 The Bone;
• appeared on Dallas’ Fox affiliate KDFW;
The band’s full, tight and melodic, yet hard-driving and energetic sound is appealing to all, and enjoys a wide range in style and influence due primarily to Zach’s vocal range. The band is five piece – two guitars, bass, drums and keys, which gives the band plenty of room to play with their set list to get it just right for their venues of choice.
In terms of covers, the band performs selections from artists such as 3 Doors Down, Alice in Chains, Better than Ezra, Cracker, Def Leppard, Foo Fighters, Gin Blossoms, Goo Goo Dolls, Rush, Jet, Greenday, Kansas, Fuel, Velvet Revolver, The Outfield, Stone Temple Pilots, Shinedown, REO Speedwagon, Boston, Matchbox 20, the Cult, the Black Crowes, and many, many more.
It’s definitely not your “average cover band” list; in fact, in no way is No Control an “average cover band.” Far from it. Seldom is it that when No Control performs at a cover venue that the dance floor is not packed, or you don’t hear someone say, “I can’t believe they pulled off that song!”
In terms of originals, the variety is almost as diverse. Zach and the band’s newest yet-to-be-released original, Ordinary Girl, is a hard driving song with meaningful lyrics about an abused and lonely girl growing up as an outcast, neatly positioned over melodic power chords that bring the emotion and intensity of the song to life. Co-written by members of the popular Dallas-band Miser, the song is destined to become an arena rocker (or at least in the minds of the band!)
One of No Control’s standout and oft-requested songs has been updated and given a current feel, and is due to be re-recorded this year. “Don’t Give Up” is the true (but slightly embellished) story of a young runaway in Houston. The song is full of thick guitars and a haunting piano sound (played in the original recording by Zach), and an uplifting message to anyone who has been down on their luck.
Zach also performs solo acoustic gigs, and includes songs from the main set list, his originals, as well as other material that is suited for an acoustic performance, such as Collective Soul, the Eagles, Breaking Benjamin, Eric Clapton, Staind, The Calling, Bryan Adams, and more. And he also includes some comedic songs that tend to make the evening even more lively. Ear muffs, please!
So whether you are looking to have fun listening, jamming and partying to your favorite covers (and some you seldom hear) from the 80’s all the way up to today, or if you hunger for new original songs to fall in love with, Zach Bair and No Control is there for you!
