NOEL EKWABI Bassist, Guitarist, Percussionist, Drumer, Singer, Arranger, Composer, Producer.
Noël Ekwabi is one of the best African musicians of the moment. Displaying an early affinity for all types of music, this Cameroonian-born and Paris-based artist began as a child by teaching himself to play drums, percussions and guitar. And by the age of fifteen, he was a member of the first youth jazz group in the country, performing alongside several proeminent Cameroonian music figures.
However, bass guitar became his biggest love and today, he is considered one of the best bassists in the world. A truly gifted musician and captivating performer, Noel is constantly offering his musical skills to renowned artists. He arrived in Marseille (France) in 1980 to study medicine. A few years later, when he left that city, he was a gold medallist of the Marseille Conservatoire. His aptitude for leading a band often gets him to serve as the musical director to many renowned music figures such as legendary Manu Dibango (with whom he worked for ten years, co-producing and co-arranging two of his latest albums). In constant demand, yet humble and discret, Noel has an impressive recording and performance catalog which is noteworthy for its caliber and its diversity. Noel’s musical artistry is certainly best expressed in his masterful integration of different musical genres; combining as he does in the album Mulato, all the varied musical influences which define his artistic personality.
Also known as «Papa Noel» (which means Santa Claus), Noel has a very special bond with children. He loves them and they love him. When he is not on stage performing or in a studio recording, he dedicates his time to teaching children, instilling in them a sense of pride and self discipline. During his tours around the globe, he often gives free Master Classes to the local youth interested in music, and act as a mentor to many young musicians.
Noel’s commitment to helping vulnerable children led him in June 2009, to co-found with his working partner Avline Ava, the ARK Jammers Connection, Inc, a non profit organization bringing together various artists and music lovers who are committed to spreading kindness and promoting intercultural dialogue. Noel who is loved and respected among his peers is rallying every one he knows to join the movement.
Now serving as the ARK Jammers Connection’s Vice President, he is also the Music Director of all ARK Jammers concerts, which in terms of quality, makes the organization’s special events even more special.
