Twenty-one year old producer Matthew Samuels didn't start with an MPC. In fact he didn't start with Fruity Loops, a computer or a keyboard. "When I was growing up, I used to live in a place called Silversprings (in east Toronto)," he recalls. "It was kind of poor, but I really didn't have much... My sister used to listen to music all the time and I just used to bang on the wall or on tables and make beats, because I didn't have anything else to do music with."
Samuels, better known as Boi-1da, has come a long way since those days. Having won in categorys in all 3 Battle of The Beat Makers (Canadas Official Producer Competition), he has begun to leave his mark on the music industry in Toronto.
"I came in real nervous into the first competition, I didn't know if there was going to be people there that would just blow me out of the water with there beats. I came in with a closed mouth, played my stuff, and won... Word I never felt more nice in my life."
Around age 10, his mother bought him a keyboard, helping to hone his musical abilities and four years later discovered a PC beat making tool by the name of Fruity Loops. Citing Dr. Dre, Timbaland and Swizz Beatz as his inspirations, Samuels is a well-rounded producer, not just catering to audiences of hip hop, but other kinds of music also, such as R & B, Pop and Reggae.
Boi-1da has managed to collab with artists such as Young Tony, Saukrates, Drake, Devine Brown, The Clipse, Trey Songz, Jim Jones, Stack Bundles, Mel Matrix, King Reign, Dow Jones, Loaded Lux, Tru Life, Ransom, Voyce, Andreena Mill, Red Shortz, Nick Fury and SG. "Making beats to me is almost like playing a sport, you cant just get up one day with no experience at all and decide you can make hot beats. You have to grind with it and live for music, just like if you wanted to be a good basketball player you'd have to eat, sleep and breathe it."
