Influences
You may like these artists, but if you don't you could very well still like us: OneRepublic, The Fray, Coldplay, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Switchfoot, Gavin DeGraw.
From humble beginnings in a small Michigan town, No Greater Sky has grown into an international ministry that is stretching boundaries both geographically and musically.
Founding member and lead vocalist Curt Anderson never intended to book an Australian tour, but this winter they will return to the land down under for their second tour. “I sent an email to a Great Plains youth conference, assuming it was the Great Plains of the USA,” says Anderson. “Instead, I got an email back saying, ‘We’re definitely interested, but do you realize we are in Australia?’” That mistake evolved into a three-month Australian tour booked exclusively by Anderson. The band played every size venue from pubs to churches, camps and schools to the main stage at festivals.
What matters most to No Greater Sky is not the size of the venue, but the impact they can make on their audience. No Greater Sky strives to make a personal connection with every crowd, whether it be a one-night concert or week-long event. “We’re passionate about music, but we’re more passionate about people. What we do on stage means nothing if we don’t invest our time offstage hanging out and talking with people.”
Max Ramsey, Senior Pastor at Immanuel Baptist Church in Wisconsin, said it best: “They live this faith and they live it in front of impressionable people who are starving for a faith worthy of believing in. They humbly point to Christ and not themselves. They are authentic and transparent. And they really, truly care about people.”
“Leading worship at camps gives us the opportunity to connect in a deeper way and get to know the crowd off the stage,” says Anderson. “A lot of our ministry happens while playing dodgeball or other group activities.”
It’s that humbleness and down-to-earth mentality that is the core of No Greater Sky’s music. Citing influences like OneRepublic, The Fray, and Switchfoot, No Greater Sky combines catchy pop music with meaningful lyrics. Anderson, who does most of the songwriting, sings about what he knows - love, grace, friendship, heartache, and most importantly, a relationship with God. “Here in Your Arms” talks about returning to God’s grace after falling away. “These Years” speaks to No Greater Sky’s younger fans about battling everyday peer pressures while knowing God will always be close.
In preparation for their 2010 album release, No Greater Sky is teaming up with veteran and award-winning songwriters, including Matt Bronleewe (Jars of Clay, Steven Curtis Chapman, Toby Mac, Leeland), Jeff Pardo (Francesca Battistelli, Sonicflood, Phil Stacey), Doug McKelvey (Switchfoot, Sanctus Real, Starfield, John Tesh), and others to bring fans new and old a fresh collection of anthemic songs that will minister, encourage and challenge.
Original songs coupled with energized and reflective worship sets resonate with audiences while the personal time spent offstage with fans makes people remember the ministry of No Greater Sky. “People may not remember every song we play, but they will always remember the time we took away from the stage to get to know them,” says Anderson, “and that’s our goal.”
