Noise Complaint was formed in 1999 when Brian Lowe and Kyle Williams were students at Free State High School and started jamming. Along with Brian’s brother, Russell, they learned how to play, write, and arrange. Some early names that were considered were Mad Thacko, Snackpants Jackson, and Severe Anal Trauma. Iridescence was selected and Cory Belt(bass guitar) and Jack Pierrelee(drums) were added to the line-up on October 21, 2000. The groups first gig was at Free State’s Battle of the Bands in November of that year. Despite the groups lack of experience they were, surprisingly, well received. Brian and Kyle followed with a couple acoustic shows at the now defunct Brown Bear Brewing Co. In 2001, Cory was replaced by Brad Nutt for a full band show at the Brown Bear which was a great success for the band. Brad was unfortunately a temporary replacement and subsequently moved to California. Two appearances at the Bottleneck’s Open Mic Night produced a lukewarm response. After that Russell and Jack left the group and the band went on a two year hiatus.
From 2002-2004, Brian played in various bands including Cripple Fight, A Band(now Aubrey), and Aeolian, while Kyle worked on projects such as Aristide and the Regulator.
In 2004, Brian and Kyle decided to resurrect the band and wet their feet playing sets at Jazzhaus’ Acoustic Open Mic Nights. In 2005, Sara Katich(bass guitar, double bass) and Michael Putnam(drums) were recruited to fill out the line-up. The new group played a couple of parties, and successful gigs at Harbour Lights and the Jet Lag. Brian and Kyle also appeared for an acoustic show at the Cup and Saucer in Kansas City. In November, Mike left the group and moved to Michigan, and briefly replaced by his friend John. The name Iridescence was then dropped. Brian subsequently switched over to drums and the current line-up debuted at Harbour Lights in March 2006 under the name Gypsy Space Muffin. That name was soon dropped in favor of Noise Complaint. Their first demo CD "From Ashes To Immorality" was then recorded and the group played three more well received gigs at Harbour Lights as well as a couple of parties to round out the summer. Fall ’06 included a gig at the Boobie Trap Bar in Topeka, the bands first show outside of Lawrence. January ’07 included a handful of gigs including an acoustic show at Solidarity! which was recorded. Jericho Vandevelde(drums) was added to the line-up in February but he left in April. Summer ’07 included gigs at The Gaslight Tavern, The Jackpot Music Hall and The Church and some light recording. In September, the band played gigs at Crimson & Brews and Beer:30 in Emporia, Ben Kramer(drums) joined the band and a compilation of the bands early rough demos, "Iridescence Demos ’99-’05," was compiled. In October, the band played a Ween tribute show at the Jazzhaus and Sara unfortunately left the band. She was replaced by Ryan Towns(bass guitar) who joined the band for a show at The Gaslight Tavern. The band played a show at The Pool Room to round out a busy October. In November, the band played a show at the Gaslight Tavern. In December, the band played shows at the Gaslight Tavern, the Barn and the Pool Room. The band played the Pool Room in January ’08 and at Haskell Indian Nations University and the Gaslight Tavern in February. They were also featured on X92.9’s local music show, Local X. March included shows at the Gaslight Tavern and the Pool Room.
