2007:

RAW DIZZY: www.rawdizzy.com

Dizzy AKA Raw D.I. has already proven himself as an establish rapper among the streets of New Orleans. The 24-year-old works overtime as a member of Young Money Entertainment, which includes platinum artist Lil Wayne, while simultaneously pursuing a solo career. Having gained the support of his fellow New Orleanians, Dizzy is setting his sights on other cities.
Dizzy recently opened up shows for Jim Jones, Juvenile and Rich Boy. He has performed frequently with Young Money Entertainment on such tours as the Nelly Ville tour in 2003, The Georgia Power Tower featuring Young Jeezy, T.I., and Lil Wayne in 2005 and the Young Money Entertainment tour in 2006. When Dizzy isn’t touring across the country you can find him performing in his hometown. Dizzy is a reoccurring performer at the New Orleans House of Blues, The Venue, Caesar’s, Club Dreams, and other clubs located in Baton Rouge, Houma, and Hammond Louisiana.
Dizzy is affiliated with Lil Wayne’s Young Money Entertainment and P.C.O. (Paper Chasin’ Organization), a label that he is a co-owner of. He was the first in New Orleans to turn mix tapes into albums. He has since released five mix tapes/albums, 1000 Miles to Downtown, Best of Dizzy AKA Raw D.I., Unload, Reloaded, The Raw, and is currently working on his sixth album, From the Ground Up. Dizzy possesses a mature street sound and his new album features hip-hop influences with contemporary style that keeps it relevant and diverse. Look for its release expected this summer.

Nutt Da Kid: www.myspace.com/ridagangent

Nutt Da Kidd is a stand out rapper from New Orleans' Ninth Ward with an impressive and hard style . He was part of the group Sqad Up with Lil Wayne, Jay Gudda, Yung Yo, Raw Dizzy and others in which he honed his skills and payed his dues, and he continues to put out rap songs with a flavor and energy all his own. Many times wearing his heart on his sleave, you can feel the love he has for his city, the time and dedication he has put into his craft, mixed with the warnings of the deep end of the street life here in New Orleans. He has been compared to the legendary Soulja Slim, by many, for writing rhymes that have a real and human quality to them. If you want to know what "real" means and you see him on the street, go up and ask him. Thats how real he is. -D.J. Johnny Bapo www.myspace.com/ridagangent for more info

KNOW ONE: www.myspace.com/mcknowone

It's almost de rigeur for post-Katrina local artists to talk about What Happened—to them, to their people, and to the city in general, naturally delivered with a healthy dose of What It All Means. That's certainly the case for members of the hip-hop community, and even moreso for one of indie label Media Darling's biggest stars. Social conscience and intelligence are expected. "By day, he spends his time rebuilding the city," proclaims the CD's booklet, as if Know-One was some sort of superhero. But it's really hip-hop he wants to save. The 23 concise tracks on this, his first disc since the tragedy, are divided into past, present, and future ruminations, and it's no coincidence that he spends almost twice as much time talking about the classic days of the genre. Being underground and old school is still his main, not-so-secret identity.

As such, there's a strong R&B flavor running through Know One's Home, as if he and virtual knob-twirler Quickie Mart realized that familiarity equals calm. The sound is just angular and jazzy enough to qualify as collegiate, but breaking new sonic ground isn't as important here as quiet reflection, as if this was a musical version of a Road Home hearing. Yet to this MC, the souls of his fellow DJs seem more in danger of decay than the Crescent City, so when Stanton Moore pops up on "Savali… It's Complicated" and all of Galactic joins in on "Too Much," it's less a gambit for musical community than a realization that popping up inadvertently in the musical mainstream carries its own special responsibilities. By day, he rebuilds the city… by night, he becomes Know One, groove vigilante. Few rappers of any scene can pull that one off.

KILLA B:
This young rising star raps with the gritty wit and flow of Jay-Z and Nas, representing a new generation's movement in New Orleans Hip-Hop. He spins lyrical stories about past and present experiences, telling the raw truth about his reality. Producing all of his own beats, Killa B is a multi-talented artist with a reputation for giving great live performances.

5TH CHILD: http://www.myspace.com/5thchildmusic

From recording karaoke machine mixtapes with his brother, to dropping two classic solo albums, 5th Child has evolved into one of the Souths most groundbreaking artists. Hailing from Jackson, MS, 5th Child has risen out of the crunk nature of his surroundings, bringing political awareness, black consciousness, and raw lyricism to the Magnolia State. This artist/producer mixes poetic commentary with soulful production giving listeners an alternative to the run-of-the-mill radio hype. His latest project, True Love is already taking over stereos and i-Pods in Houston, LA, New York, New Orleans, and of course Mississippi.

About me:

New Orleans Hip-Hop for Hope is more than just a benefit concert and an organization; it is a shared vision for a better future. Hip-Hop for Hope is a student-led organization comprised of college students, professors, local businesses, artists, activists, and community leaders who all recognize the power of music as a means of communicating a positive message, a forum for raising awareness about important issues and a means to raise money for an important mission. The goal of this event is to raise money to support educational programming at MLK and to raise awareness about two key community issues, Education and HIV/AIDS. MLK reopened September 19, 2006 and serves 368 children from throughout Greater New Orleans. In the fall of 2007, the MLK Jr. Charter School will be returning to its original site in the 9th Ward, serving as a beacon of hope for a community that is still struggling to rebuild after the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina. Last November, 2006, the First Annual Hip-Hop for Hope Benefit Concert and Block Party was able to raise over $5,500 dollars for this incredible school. With your help, Hip-Hop for Hope 2007 can once again contribute to the revitalization effort underway in New Orleans while bringing people from throughout the city together for an afternoon of fun and festivity and an evening of music appreciation.

Who I'd like to meet:

New Orleans Hip-Hop for Hope:

Making History

Summary of Hip-Hop for Hope 2006

  • The first annual event was held on November 16th, 2006, in two stages:
    1. A Community Block Party, from 4pm- 7pm, held in the parking lot of SAV-A-CENTER on the corner of Tchopitoulous and Napoleon.
    2. A Benefit Concert across the street at Tipitina’s, from 7pm-1pm

    Recap of 2006 Block Party

The Community Block Party featured food and games for young people, as well as live music from Da Truth Brass Band, 5th Child and Sir Dilla.

    • New Orleans Criminal Sheriff Marlin D. Gusman gave a speech addressing issues such as violence, crime and HIV/AIDS, and encouraging young people to stay in school and work together to end these problems.
    • Local community groups and student organizations from Tulane and Loyola purchased tables at the event to raise awareness about their organizations and the issues they address.
    • These groups focused on a variety of topics such as music, College Preparatory Programs, Leadership Seminars, HIV/AIDS, and the Environment.
    • The event ended with a candle-lit “Second Line March,” led by Da Truth Brass Band, symbolizing the community’s commitment to ending violence in the city.

    Summary of 2006 Benefit Concert

The Benefit Concert featured a wide variety of local and nationally recognized artists, including:

  • Baby Boy da Prince, the Soul Rebels Brass Band, Outlaw Nation, Truth Universal, Jimi Clever, J-Dubble, Nomadic Souls, the Zoo, Impulss, Soap Box, the Able Chris, and many others.
  • The Hip-Hop for Hope staff, comprised of students and volunteers, sold concert tickets, T-Shirts and raffle tickets at the event.
  • The concert drew in an audience of over 600 people from a variety of backgrounds and age groups.
  • Through the sale of tickets, T-Shirts and raffle tickets, the event was able to raise over $5,500 to benefit the Martin Luther King Jr. Charter School.

Personal Testimonies:

"Hip-Hop for Hope 2006 was a great time for me to hang out with several of my students, enjoy energetic performances by leading local artists and bands, and feel good about supporting an important issue. It was a great Post-Katrina event that reminded me why I love New Orleans so much and why I am proud to be a professor at Tulane. For true hip-hop fans like me, it was non-stop action demonstrating that the New Orleans hip-hop scene has much to feel proud about. I can't wait for the next event."
- Shayne Lee, Ph.D. Sociology, Professor at Tulane University

More information about our first annual event...

As the crowd moved through the entrance of Tipitina’s, they were met by the soulful melodies of the Soul Rebel Brass Band. This prolific and talented group served as a reminder of the deeply rooted jazz and brass band influence on Hip-Hop culture in New Orleans, while setting the tone for the night. The concert featured performances by dozens of local hip-hop artists and bands, including Baby Boy da Prince, Outlaw Nation, Know One, the Able Chris, Soapbox, the Zoo, J-Dubble, the Villa, Jimi Clever, SpellBindarz, Sir Dilla, 5th Child, Nomadic Souls and others. With an attendance of over 600 people from all walks of life, the energy in the venue was positively electrifying. Students volunteering for Hip-Hop for Hope sold raffle tickets, t-shirts and CD’s to raise money, while each artist took their opportunity to ignite the crowd with a variety of styles, sounds and ideas. Thanks to the business sponsors and private donors, including Q93, Offbeat Magazine, WOW Wingery, Urban Angels Hair Salon, The New Orleans Music Exchange, and others, the event successfully raised over $5,500 to be donated to the MLK Jr. Charter School. Thanks again to everyone who made it possible, from individuals to organizations, artists to businesses. The impact this event had on the community is undeniable… and it’s just getting started.
