MARGHERITA ERRANTE was born in Como in 1976. She is a scholar of Chinese language and culture, speaks five languages and works as a freelance writer and photographer. She studied in Paris, London, and Beijing. She specialized in ethnolinguistics, editing in three years of research in the field the first-ever grammar compendium of a dialect of Southwest China.
From 1999 to 2005 she mainly lived in China, among Beijing, Chongqing and Kunming, where she taught English and French in Chinese universities and occasionally collaborated with the local Department of Foreign Affairs for the establishment of international exchanges.
In 2004 she lived eight months into an indigenous village of Wa ethnic minority people, in the jungle of the Sino-Burmese border, where she studied Wa material culture and compiled a Wa-Chinese-English small dictionary. In March 2005 she organized a personal photographic exhibition and published a photographic book to raise funds for the village where she lived.
She traveled through the Far East, the Himalaya region, Indochina, Africa, Europe, USA and Canada. In the spring of 2005 she was chosen as photographer for a diplomatic Peace Mission sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and traveled about 20.000km by car from Italy to Japan. The following year the group won the Commitment For Peace Prize awarded by the Governor of Lombardy.
Margherita is a member of the American Anthropological Association; she's the author of a Chinese Language Course to be published next summer by DeAgostini Editore; she writes about architectural anthropology, the structural view of design and environmental protection for the Italian magazine TALE&A. She collaborates with Class CNBC as a freelance TV reporter and she's now based in Beijing where she's working on a book about Beijing Contemporary Architecture.
