Interests

  • General

    Interests change over time to a certain extent and I'm no exception, but I've always had a thing for: Art Decco, 1940's ladies hairstyle/fashion, Gothic Buildings, Military equipment/clothing, Art, Music, Science Fiction, Survival Training, Self-development. At present I'm enjoying lots of DIY, comedy on BBC Radio 4 & 7, reading about new gadgets and trawling websites. I am drawn to learning about different world cultures, the great Outdoors, survival skills, voluntary work, media studies, travel, cooking, movies, TV, sci-fi, and I enjoy going to the theatre when something catches my eye (lecture, comedy, music). I don't hate much, but I still manage to loathe the monoculture that is spreading around the world, which I blame on big business and their marketing people coming up with 'one size fits all', rather than doing their job really well and differently in each and every country. Vive la difference!!!
  • Music

    Too many artists to mention, best guide is my car stereo which had Radio 1, Kiss FM, XFM, VIBE FM, Radio 4, Essex FM all set up, but now I've gone to DAB and there are far too many stations to choose from, so I now channel-hop between them all to avoid the waffle, pop tunes aimed at the under 5's and adverts. I do like dance tracks, Muse, hell I'll even publicly admit to liking Men at Work - their 'Overkill' album is a classic. I've been to Creamfields, V festivals, but haven't done Glasto (yet). The morning drive to work is spent listening to the Comedy hour on BBC Radio 7.
  • Movies

    I've seen a whole lot of movies, far too many good ones to list them all here, visit http://nonfictionguy.listal.com/ for full details. But my current top favourites include... The Grand Hotel (1932) ; Jaws ; Star Wars (Original) ; Leon ; As Good As It Gets ; Alien/s ; Dogma ; Rear Window (Original) ; Predator ; Predator 2 ; Army of Darkness ; 12 Angry Men (Original) ; The Incredibles ; Groundhog Day ; Appleseed ; Taxi (Original) ; When the wind blows ; Blast from the Past ; Fargo ; Outbreak ; Scrooge (Alistair Sim version) ;Matrix ; True Lies ; Lord of the Rings ; Final Fatasty ; The Pianist ; Shaun of the Dead ; 28 Days Later ; Donnie Darko ; Blade ; Twelve Monkeys ; Ordinary Decent Criminal ; Kpax ; South Park ; Sin City ; Speed ; Eternal sunrise of the spotless mind ; Memento ; Amelie ; Blade Runner ; Some like it hot ; The station agent ; Lock stock & two smoking barrels; Snatch ; About a Boy ;
  • Television

    I enjoy factual TV (Horizon), comedy (Black Books) & sci-fi (Quatermass). Shows I've enjoyed include... Dr Who ; Life on Mars (RIP); Shameless ; Stargate (RIP) ; Lost (RIP); 24 ; Family Guy ; Malcolm in the Middle (RIP); Gadget Show ; Country File ; My name is Earl ; Man stroke woman ; The Big Bang Theory ; Pushing Daisies ;
  • Books

    I loved Douglas Adams (RIP); but I mostly read non-fiction, 'An Underground Education' is a must read book that I'd recommend to everyone. Also books by Disinfo Publications are rather interesting. Focus magazine was also great until the BBC bought it - not recommended now. I'm also pleased the Wired magazine is available in the UK again.
  • Heroes

    I don't have any heroes, nor do I believe in them - people only do what they believe is right for them at the time. Just because the results may be pleasing to others does not make them Heroes - just popular! I do however think my wife is amazing and I'm so proud of her and everything she does.

Blurbs

About me:

Born in Essex (UK), grew-up and educated in Ireland (Cork & Wexford mostly). Lived in Essex for 21 years, but have since moved to Kent. Still have a fondness for Irish culture, black pudding and soda bread. I love to learn and I tend to read a lot of magazines and trawl the net quite often. I am not the traditional 'Essex Man', although I do say 'cheers' instead of 'thank you' and everyone is a 'mate'. I'm trying to change - just would not be the Kent thing to do!

My early career was spent helping my folks and working as an editorial cartoonist, I later became a Trainee then qualified Graphic Designer, but I only found my true calling when I started doing voluntary work for a local charity. I have now worked in the Non-Profit sector for over fifteen years.

What am I like as a person? Best ask my friends and family, all I can tell you is that I love art, but only for pleasure. I've run a marathon, but I'm not sporty. I've trekked, but I'm not the outdoors type. I like to learn new skills and keeping my mind active. I am a dog person, but I attract all the local cats. I'll try anything once, apart from drugs, and I love food. Favourite treats are Root Beer, Dandelion & Burdock, Rhubarb, Pears, Pineapple, Cherry Ice Cream, Chocolate, Fresh baked bread with butter, soft boiled egg in a mug with salt and a slice of buttered toast. I've learnt a little T'ai Chi and have mastered the art of baking white chocolate and banana muffins. I want to make the most of every day and be as productive as possible.

If you want to be a friend then please do introduce yourself, I don't do blind adds for 'New friends' and that applies equally to bands. Spammers and business junk friend invites will be reported.

Wishing you all the very best!

Who I'd like to meet:

I would like to hear from people with different interests to my own, to spark my learning in new areas. It may be a small world but I'll never see it all myself, so if you can fill in some gaps, so much the better!
