Ani DiFranco just finished a No Nukes tour to spotlight the loan guarantees/subsidies/nuclear relapse issue and raise funds for NIRS, bless her soul. It featured appearances by Dennis Kucinich in Boston, Asheville & NYC, our director, Michael Mariotte in DC & Baltimore and our board member and Head of the Green Party of Canada, Elizabeth May in Toronto. This was filmed by out board member, Susan Alzner- her road mgr- in Ani's New Orleans studio. Ani's the real deal helped us with our victory against the PFS high-level nuclear waste dump targeted for the Skull Valley Goshute reservation in Utah by lobbying with us on the Hill!

NIRS exists to initiate and nurture the empowerment of people to end commercial nuclear power based on sound knowledge and principled action.
NIRS was founded in 1978 to be the national information and networking center for citizens and environmental activists concerned about nuclear power, radioactive waste, radiation and sustainable energy issues.
We still fulfill that core function, but have moved on both programmatically and geographically. For example, we initiate large-scale organizing and public education campaigns on specific issues such as preventing new atomic reactors, showing how nuclear power is counterproductive to fighting climate change, stopping scientifically indefensible radioactive waste dumps like the proposed Yucca Mountain project, preventing the deregulation and out-of-control release of radioactive materials, pointing out the dangers of radioactive waste transportation, and for a safe, clean, sustainable energy future. Our affiliation with WISE-Amsterdam in 2000 means that we now have offices and programs across the globe.
