About me: **Dear Friends, since myspace is plagued by skilled hackers and spam-slingers, we'd like you to accept our apologies for any spam e-mails or bulletins you may be subjected to purportedly from us. We'd like for you to know that NIRS would never really send or post anything remotely of that nature. Please don't hesitate to notify us if you see such things. Thanks so much for your support!**
NIRS exists to initiate and nurture the empowerment of people to end commercial nuclear power based on sound knowledge and principled action.
NIRS was founded in 1978 to be the national information and networking center for people and environmental activists concerned about nuclear power, radioactive waste, radiation and sustainable energy issues.
We still fulfill that core function, but have moved on both programmatically and geographically. For example, we initiate large-scale organizing and public education campaigns on specific issues such as preventing new atomic reactors, showing how nuclear power is counterproductive to fighting climate change, stopping scientifically indefensible radioactive waste dumps like the proposed Yucca Mountain project, preventing the deregulation and out-of-control release of radioactive materials, pointing out the dangers of radioactive waste transportation, and for a safe, clean, sustainable energy future. Our affiliation with WISE-Amsterdam in 2000 means that we now have offices and programs across the globe.
Grace Thorpe, brilliant and beloved Native anti-nuclear activist 1921-2008

OUT OF CONTROL - ON PURPOSE:
DOE's Dispersal of Radioactive Waste into Landfills and Consumer Products
Radioactive materials are being released from nuclear weapons facilities to regular landfills and into commercial recycling streams where they can be used to make everyday household items.
This is a key finding of a new NIRS report: Out of Control – On Purpose: DOE's Dispersal of Radioactive Waste into Landfills and Consumer Products. The report was commissioned to track the DOE’s policies and procedures for releasing nuclear wastes from nuclear bomb production. The report was released on May 14, 2007.
