During the academic school year of 2009, Mr. Deep Positivity (MDP), has facilitated an after school program for the Providence After School Alliance (PASA) titled, Nonviolent Verses.
The goal of this program is to teach and motivate youth to write, record and perform their own positive songs so that they can become role models for their peers.
Students participate in brainstorming activities and classroom discussions centered around Nonviolence which help generate information for their songs. These conversations allow students to voice their opinions about issues that are important to them and also learn from one another.
MDP, a 15 year rap veteran and certified Nonviolence Instructor for the Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence (ISPN) combines his years of rapping experience with his teaching expertise to help students create powerful lyrics. Over the past year Nonviolent Verses students have recorded 16 positive, inspirational songs and filmed 3 music videos. These songs and videos were sent to president Obama to give the students a sense of pride and accomplishment and to show the president the incredible works these youth have created.
