Filthy Lesson Records is releasing a limited 250 pieces of pretty vinyl for our debut record Grew Some Feet only online at inSound and at shows. This shit will be on iTunes soon, too. We bought some more tape and are recording some more songs (don't know what will come of it).

My Old Kentucky Blog - Link text With a name like No One & the Nobodies, a band is bound to get some funny looks, but when your music shows as much promise and potential as these San Francisco-based genre-hoppers, it's easy to get far enough past that to see that these Nobodies are destined to be Somebody. Their self-released debut, Grew Some Feet, was recorded entirely in analog by Greg Ashley (formerly of Gris Gris) on one-inch tape, which the band paid for with money earned from recycling beer bottles and cans. How's that for livin' green?
Brief back-story aside, we can now focus on the songs, and the photo above pretty much says it all. Right On, Fire is a sure-fire album standout, regurgitating the raw, off-kilter guitar plucking and vocal delivery that made those early Modest Mouse records so damn good, yet reinvented with a little Velvet Underground-cool by the fresh-faced singer/songwriter, Thomas Hall.

Don't let the self-deprecating name fool you: No One & The Nobodies are a Bay Area band worth knowing. The garage rockers arrive fully fluent in cool nonchalance and woozy post-narcotic fuzz on their Greg Ashley-produced debut Grew Some Feet (Filthy Lesson Records), hereby launched at this release party. Better still, they have the songwriting savvy to do justice to their 1960s and '70s influences. Singer Thomas Hall serves up some of the most exquisitely hazy vocals I've heard in a while. Check his sweetly cloud-headed delivery on the slide guitar-and-handclaps barroom rambler "Bring Out Your Dead" for further illumination.

This San Francisco quartet delights in fantasy identities and has mastered an eclectic garage-psych album, "Grew Some Feet," to be released at tonight's gig. The album ranges far and wide, incorporating everything from marching band to country twang mixed with lounge piano. The band's lyrics "choose your words wisely" reflect the depth of its sentimental and mildly melancholy croons. To counterbalance the lonely moments, upbeat whistling, heartfelt hand claps and gorgeous guitar riffs fill the fuzzy, vintage-sounding recordings with a liveliness that keeps listeners happily on their toes.

It should come as no surprise that San Francisco's No One & the Nobodies is working with Greg Ashley on its debut record. The band has touches of the artistically ramshackle, folksy psych that Ashley's released under various guises (most notably with Gris Gris and his solo records). I really like what I've heard from this group of Nobodies (Thomas Hall, Mario Diaz, [the Merman]), whose soft-focus rock also carries in it hints of Vetiver. Remarkably, every song on the group's MySpace page is worth a listen, but I particularly like the scattershot sentiments on "Old Nick's Getting Lonely," a ballad comprising a wistful croon, perky whistling, and excellent guitar and organ grooves. It's the kind of tune that sounds like it was made before the writer could fully shake out all the cobwebs, making for a dusty, melancholy ditty that's fuzzy (and warm) in all the right places.
