Martin's music and style of quitar playing are as much influenced by modern indie as by our other styles. Likewise in Paul's vocal style and performance you might be able to detect the old school punk roots he grew up with! Besides these, our influences are:
Nic Jones, Martin Carthy, Leadbelly, Woody Guthrie, John Conolly, The Watersons, Vin Garbutt, Billy Bragg, The Dubliners, Jez Lowe, The Wurzels, Chumbawamba, Ewan MacColl, Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span, Eric Bogle, The Corries, Tri Yann, an grizzled old Bristol Shantyman by the name of Eric Ilott and many more besides!
So what is Norcsalordie? (nork-sa-lordy) Well, we rock big style folk - slow and fast from all over the English speaking world, (and if our current project goes according to plan, beyond). As well as our repertoire of traditional songs we have heaps of our own original material.
The individual members of the band are Martin and Paul.
Martin Neal or, as he's known to his friends, Biggs, is the guitarist and also does backing vocals. He comes up with the tunes on his trusty old 12 string. Originally from Sidcup, Kent, he has flirted with many different styles of music, which is definately evident in his guitar playing. He brings a variety to folk music that makes it both contemporary and engaging.
Paul McHugh aka Macca is the singer. He writes the lyrics for most of Norcsalordie's songs and likes to use his lyrics in a blunt, no nonsense kinda way. Originally from Grimsby in Lincolnshire, he's proud of his roots and many of his songs are based on the folklore and history of his home region, in particular the marshes (or carrs) of North Lincs where he grew up.
We're all about putting life into our live music. We wanna see you guys out there dancing, singing and clapping along. We reckon folk musicians today tend to concentrate on the downbeat, soleful side of traditional music while the happy upbeat dancy, drinky type songs are neglected- well we aim to bring 'em back!
Anyways on with the show - have a listen, see what you think!
