One quiet evening many moons ago a Fremantle local dropped a coin whilst at the Bar of his favourite watering hole, The Norfolk. As bad luck would have it the coin dropped through a small gap in the aging boards. He scratched his head and cursed his luck. Turning to the portly barkeep the unlucky drinker asked in a serious yet amiable tone "What's under this bloody pub Tom?"
Now Tom was normally a jovial kinda barman - quick with a joke or a light up your smoke. He shook his head and replied "just keep drinkin, and i'll pretend you never asked."
The local had had a couple and persisted, "what's the big bloody secret, I been comin here for years you grumpy bugger."
Tom put two hands on the bar and looked the local in the eye,"do you really wanna know?........do ya?......."
"Well Yeh. How bad can it be," he asked back slightly nervously.
For the next twenty minutes Tom talked without interuption. The blood drained from the local's face as Tom spoke. What was said will never be known, for the man who heard it never returned or told a soul. Some said he went crazy. Others said he moved to Canberra. Either way his fate was sealed that night.
The only clues as to the contents of Tom's speach were overheard by a couple of barfly's at the other end of the bar as the local stumbled out of the pub in fear. The words he repeated over and over were this "BEAST ...made ...of ROCK.....in....BASEMENT......"
