As an international platform it aims to understand and show the many and often contradictory faces of cultural globalization and localization through articles about music, urbanism and politics, «authenticity», «modernity», «place» and «transnational spaces», written by musicians, scholars and music journalists from Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe and the US.

Norient was founded by Thomas Burkhalter, an ethnomusicologist and cultural journalist from Bern (Switzerland). He has written on the music and cultural scenes of cities like Beirut, Istanbul, Cairo, Duschanbe, Belgrade, Johannesburg, and Mumbai for Swiss and international media.
NORIENT also produces larger and smaller projects and events. In 2008 it co-produces Urban African Club Nights in collaboration with motherland in Zurich. Furthermore it travels with its Sound Talk «Soundscapes from the Edges».
