Who I'd like to meet:
My only decent subject in school was English. I was actually named “Author of The Month.” They put a picture of me up in my plaid tie and sunburned face, which is really how you win over friends in third grade is to gain distinctions as a writer. Once they respect your writing, they won’t push you down the stairs anymore because they know who has the literary prowess. I used to write poetry. Though poetry is very different when you’re a kid. When you’re an adult, poetry is about love and pain. When you’re kid, it’s like "DOES ANYBODY KNOW A WORD THAT RHYMES WITH SHARKS?" So as a kid, I wanted to grow up and be a poet, a rapper, and the owner of a pizza restaurant where 3rd graders could hang out, which seemed cute at the time, but if I said that now, my friends when would be like "What’s the deal with the 3rd graders?" and I’d be like "Stay out of it. A friendship between an adult and a child is precious."
I also wanted to be a rapper and a break-dancer. I’m not sure anyone made a living being a break-dancer. It’s hard to pay rent when you make 15 bucks a day in nickels, especially since 40 cents of that goes towards the cardboard. And I wanted to be a rapper but rap was very innocent when I was a kid. It was like "Ribbity rap rap rap-a-raptastic!" Rap has gotten so arbitrarily aggressive. Rappers will be like "It’s 2006, mofo!" I’m like "you’re mad about the date? You gotta pick your battles, man. You get mad about that, no one’s going to believe you when you get mad about real stuff. Like 'you crashed into my car, mofo!' yea, but you were mad that it was 2006…you’re like the boy who cried...mofo.
In the 1st grade, I ran into this Stranger at church, and he told me to follow Him. So I did, and He's still leading me places. It's been a crazy trip so far. I play acoustic guitar or bass for a church (I play them on different weeks depending on the need). Its a big church. Often, I doubt my abilities as a musician. For years, I just acted the part, and when I was put in this scenario, I was scared at first. I've never fully realized the skill or talent that I possess. Different people that I've never met tell me I'm good each week. I thank them, then pretend it never happened. I guess that's humility.
God's given me a gift. Everything I do is thanks for what he's given me.
