Other Folk Things That We Do

Tracy is a member of the Pengwyn Rapper Dancers and teaches and dances with the Richmond Castle Cloggers.

Joe is a young and already very experienced folk musician. He plays electric and acoustic violin, mandolin and tenor banjo. He also plays with folk/rock band String Theory (see Sinead), as well as deputising with other ceilidh bands. When he’s not playing folk Joe listens to metal!

Hutch ran a very successful folk club for 17 years. After more than 30 years performing together as Nebula, Hutch and Roly Hindmarch decided to call it a day, also bringing to an end the shorter lived Nebula Big Band (with Babs Mason and Terry Wisker).

However, Nebula will continue with Hutch (vocals, guitar, cittern), Terry Wisker (percussion) and and Joe Childs (fiddle and tenor banjo), playing a great deal of new material as well as favourite songs and tunes from the bands past. The band will also perform as a "Big Band" with multi-instrumentalist Andy Lawrenson and guitarist/singer Ritchie Fletcher.

Hutch also finds time to play with roving "Irish" group The Blethermen.

Terry taught bodhran at evening classes and one-day workshops for Folkworks (the N.E. England based folk arts organisation) from 1997 until 2007; prior to this he taught for Cairde na nGael in East London. He has also taught for the Edinburgh based Scots Music Group. He offers individual tuition and is available for workshops at festivals etc.

Terry is a member of Nebula and has performed with Chimera, an electric jazz/folk/rock band led by Andy Lawrenson. Terry also plays percussion with the Durham based medieval music group Wulffengrimm.

Terry, together with fiddle players Stewart Hardy and Chuck Fleming and piper Dave Shaw, recorded the music and appeared in two series of the Granada TV comedy drama "Distant Shores".

Terry is also a member of the Earls of Essex morris men.

Sinead is the youngest member of the band, however she's been listening to, and more recently playing this music for most of her eighteen years, she also plays rock and metal on her drum kit, but we haven't yet been persuaded to include this in the Compass Rose sound!

Sinead also plays drums with String Theory, a Darlington based folk/rock ceilidh band all of whose members are still in their teens.

Instruments

Tracy plays a Chieftain high D tuneable whistle, a Susato tuneable D whistle, Susato tuneable low D whistle and Jupiter flute.

Joe plays an electric violin by Bridge, a David Freshwater mandolin and a Deering tenor banjo.

Hutch plays a Line 6 digital guitar, an acoustic guitar by Barry Robinson and cittern and bouzouki by Stefan Sobell.

Terry plays Seamus O'Kane and Marc Moggy bodhrans and wenge bones from Hobgoblin. LP.Matador congas, AAX splash cymbal by Sabian, Mienl tambourine and bar chimes by Treeworks. Terry's sticks are made by Eoin Leonard.

Sinead plays a Marc Moggy bodhran and LP.Matador congas. Sinead's sticks are made by Eoin Leonard.

Ed plays a Blue Moon guitar and an Irish bouzouki by Terry Wisker .

Olivia has two Rennie fiddles and a third fiddle which apparently was a very lucky £15 buy from a jumble sale!

Emma plays a Vignoni 72 bass piano accordion.

Reflecting the band members own musical backgrounds we play a variety of great music from around the British Isles and beyond, both traditional and some more recent tunes, but always chosen with the dancer in mind.

With its two vocalists the band can easily be encouraged to sing a song or two and are pleased to accept bookings for concerts/folk clubs.

We hope you will find in these pages, most of the information you need to know about the band; including its members, contact details and any public events we are playing in the near future. Please ring or email Terry Wisker with any further questions you might have, and to check out cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do we get if we book the Compass Rose Ceilidh Band?
A 4/5 piece ceilidh band that offers a youthful and talented melody section and a mature! and experienced rhythm section (kept in line by our youngest member, Sinead) to drive the band along.

A very experienced Caller, quality instruments, a full Public Address (PA.) system, and, perhaps most importantly, a band that enjoys what it does and wants to be there.

Whats the difference between a ceilidh and a barn dance?
Quite simply these terms and also 'folk dance' are now pretty much interchangeable, with ceilidh now in more frequent use.

Do we have to have experience of ceilidh/barn dancing?
No, our Caller will talk, and walk the dancers through each dance before the music starts and will continue to give help as needed, in an easy going and often humorous style.

Will the dances be too difficult?
Each of our callers has a large repertoire of dances allowing them to tailor the choice of dances to the experience/ability of the dancers. Their choice of dances for the event is never fixed beforehand and wherever possible allows for special requests, such as one from a kilted 3 year old page boy who wanted to do the "spinning dance" again, from which the other guests were only just recovering! we did it again!

How much time will the band need to set up?
One hour will give sufficient time to set up and do sound checks, and about 30mins at the end of the evening to clear away.

Will the band need a stage from which to play?
A stage does have advantages, however we are very experienced at playing from the floor. Please remember to leave sufficient space for 5 musicians standing in line and speakers on stands at either end. We'll also require access to a power socket, a small table and chairs.

How long will a typical evening last?
For us there isn't really a typical evening, however in our experience a birthday party/social event might begin at 7.30pm and go on to 11.00/11.30pm with a 30 min break at 9.00pm. An evening wedding reception might have similar timings except that it might go on until midnight, unless as is often the case a disco finishes the evening from perhaps 11.00pm.

However, it's your event and timings and requirements are flexible, we'll always do our best to give you the evening that you want. On the night, the bands Caller also takes on the role of liaising with the hosts to help ensure that the evening goes without a hitch.
