Northeast Heritage Music Camp celebrates the acoustic music and folk dance traditions of New England, Appalachia, and eastern Canada. We offer a full week of instruction by world-class players, plus an evening program featuring contra- and square- dancing, concerts, & jamming opportunities.
General Program: NHMC features five class sessions per day, each one hour and fifteen minutes long. Classes start at 9 a.m. and continue until 4:00 p.m. Our evening program (Monday to Thursday) features staff concerts followed by contra-dancing, with music provided by our staff. The Friday evening program features a class-recital followed by contra-dancing to student bands. Over the course of the week, you'll have the opportunity to hear all our staff members in concert and dance to their music.
Jamming: We offer the opportunty to participate in spirited jams at all levels. There will be big faculty-led jams that focus on a variety of genres: Québecois, Irish, Cape Breton/Scottish, and Appalachian old-time.
Kinds of Instruction: Each teacher offers daily classes in his or her specialty. Most classes are offered at three levels: basic, intermediate, and advanced. Students work throughout the week in the learning situation most appropriate to their playing levels.
Beginners: We will feature beginners' classes in fiddle, guitar, and certain other instruments; check our website for specifics as they become available.
Fiddle rentals: You don't even need to own a fiddle! Rentals are available locally through Vermont Violins. Location: The Johnson State College campus in Johnson, Vermont is not far from Stowe, the famous ski resort, roughly thirty miles northeast of Burlington, and about the same distance northwest of the state capital, Montpelier. Lodging: Lodging is in the JSC dormitories; which feature real beds, desks, closets, windows (many with gorgeous views), and even phone connections.
Dining: All meals feature vegetarian, vegan, and omnivore options. The food quality has been exceptionally high.
Tuition: $700 (in US funds) includes room, board, and tuition. Vermont residents have an option to forego lodging costs and commute to the event, but JSC regulations require that all students in residence sign up for the meal plan. Non-residents may purchase meals on a pay-as-you-go basis at the JSC dining facility. Early-Bird Discount: Register before 1/1/08 and pay $20 less for tuition!
Registration: To register, fill in a registration form (available on our website) and send it with payment. You can send the full amount at any time, but a deposit of $200 will hold your place until April 15, when all outstanding tuition balances must be paid up. After that date, all new registrations must be accompanied by full tuition payment.
