If you have time to serve on any committees (showcasing, programming, registration), please let us know. If you are willing to volunteer some of your time (and possibly work off some of your registration fee) to be a workshop monitor, badge checker, tech support, etc., please fill out the volunteer form and let us know.

NERFA 2008 | Northeast Regional Folk Alliance Conference
November 13-16, 2008
Hudson Valley Resort | Kerhonkson, NY 12446 | HudsonValleyResort.com

Welcome to the NorthEast Regional Folk Alliance Conference.
The conference includes: workshops, panel discussions, seminars, an exhibit hall, formal showcases in the nightclub, and private and guerilla showcases in one large designated area. On this website you will find all the forms you need for conference registration, hotel reservations, showcase applications, workshop proposals, exhibit hall rental as well as answers to many questions.
Those of us who have worked on this conference since 1994 take pride in what we have accomplished, but we are also constantly striving to create an event to better serve the needs of the Folk Music community, both professional and volunteer. We have carefully examined your evaluation forms and have made changes we hope will improve an already wonderful gathering.
Those of you who have attended the conference over the past couple of years are familiar with Kutsher's. Although it is somewhat spread out, everything is under one roof. No walking or driving a half-mile to get to the main building. There are many rooms available for our use, plus we are able to devote several areas of the resort to showcasing and all night jamming.
Some of the other amenities offered include: a year round ice skating rink, fully equipped health club, ultra fast internet access available in every room, indoor and outdoor pools, whirlpool baths, racquetball, tennis, yoga, biking, boating, hiking trails, miniature golf, horseback riding, tubing, arts and crafts, a shopping arcade and, in the winter, snowmobiling, sleigh rides and skiing. Of course, there is much more. But, we should really try to get some serious business done.
Look what you get:
There is a welcoming cocktail party with delicious hors d'oeuvres on Friday afternoon plus dinner on Friday evening, brunch and dinner on Saturday and Lunch on Sunday. All meals are buffet style with many selections from which to choose. In fact, Kutsher's is renowned for their wonderful kosher cooking. This year we promise all the food will be properly labeled. We actually had an abundance of Vegetarian food last year but, since it was not mark, many were not aware of this.
In past years, many of us arrived on Thursday. We had a wonderful, relaxed evening and spent some quality time together before the conference officially began. This past year there were some very successful guerilla showcases on Thursday evening. There were so few of them that they were almost guaranteed a captive audience. If you plan to have a table in the exhibit hall, think you might be interested in a Friday morning Half-Day Intensive, would like to join us for a relaxing Thursday evening get together or if you have any other reason to be in your room early, it would be a good idea to plan on a Thursday evening arrival. Kutsher's is quite convenient to public transportation from New York City. Driving directions will be included with your confirmation letter. If you need immediate information to make plane reservations, we suggest you check out their website. Check-in time is 4pm and check-out time is 2pm! However, since we have the entire place to ourselves and they are opening just for us, I have been told there should not be a problem checking in earlier than 4pm.
How you can get involved?
Those working on the programming and showcase committees include members from the entire region. If you have time to serve on any committee (showcasing, programming, registration), please let us know. If you are willing to volunteer some of your time (and possibly work off some of your registration fee) to be a workshop monitor, badge checker, tech support, etc., please fill out the enclosed volunteer form. If you have friends who are involved in ANY way in the business of folk music but have not as yet joined the Folk Alliance, Please encourage them to come with you to this conference.
We are specifically focused on finding new sources for reaching out to PRESENTERS. Anyone who books talent from Private Parties to Folk Festivals, from Ski Resorts to Art Centers, from Labor Rallies to House Concerts, falls into this category. We need YOUR help in finding even more untapped markets. If you have any ideas, please contact us.
Once again, we are offering Presenters Incentives for NERFA Money to presenters who have not yet been to NERFA. If you know some first-time presenters who may qualify, please have them give our office a call (215-546-7766) and leave a message. A PRESENTER is the person who hires the talent and puts together a concert or a series of concerts - Anything from a house concert to a large festival. There has been some misunderstanding in the past with the meaning of the term ?presenter.? We thought it would be best to clarify.

After you've finished here, you may like to hear this folk-carol on myspace... Poem 230 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (see my blog for details): CHRISTMAS SUNG SIMPLY
As gospellers have said, Beneath signalling skies, On land dusty to tread, A trough in a stable Was the strawy first-bed Of a divine baby - The forgiving Godhead.
A season for new hope - There then and here now; The yuletide of goodwill - There then and here now.
In respect of this chance, Beneath bright or dark skies, Faith's the star that we glance Attending Christ's churches And trying to enhance, With singing and ritual, Our God-loving stance.
Here's a video that was captured of me offering my bottleneck slide interpretation of an old blues song, Goin' T' Brownsville, on open mic night at Old Strokers in Everett, WA. It starts out with me briefly introducing my homemade "Nobro" resophonic guitar and explaining some of the various recycled garage sale junk that I used in it's construction. Enjoy!

Poem 162 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (please see my blog): TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001
Where traditions are not so rare; Sea, country and works scent the air; A multitude of monuments, Planted tubs and patterned pavements.
The longish pedestrian malls; The remnants of defensive walls; Historic buildings are a gauge Of the respect for heritage.
Wheat, rape and pines in the fields; Estuaries guarded by shields; Long sandy beaches and wide scenes; Romantic-ruin go-betweens.
Rivers in parts licked by trees, Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries, And crossed by practical delights - Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.
Fine churches headed at Durham; Football kits ad infinitum; Kept castles - one for study; Masonry behind masonry.
And, with moulding-works out that way, It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?

Poem 2 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (please see my blog): WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN
Once drove an old sedan, up north, From a place in Sydney to Cairns; Then to Kuranda I went forth, By train, to look without set plans.
I browsed through the trendy market, With fresh fruits of tropical kind; Walked to the creek through lush thicket - Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.
I dined in a scenic cafe; Then, outside, as I wrote for yen, Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey, You go walkabout with your pen.”
Request or question, I don’t know - Assured voices, elderly men. That’s now several years ago, And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.
Will Scott's new album, GNAWBONE is here!!! The CD is available at CDBaby and other online retailers.
Over three years in the making, GNAWBONE is Scott's fully-produced studio debut and features a crack team of hand-picked musicians as well as guest performances by Jan Bell, Jolie Holland, Samantha Parton, and Preacher Boy (the album's producer).
In early October I wrote one of my latest songs called, “Wall Street Bail Out Blues.” Within four days of writing it, a video crew captured me playing it on the street at Seattle’s Pike Place Market and posted their video on YouTube. That video has now reached the attention of a writer for The Wall Street Journal who is writing an article about those who have written songs about our tough economic times. His article will be published this week and I’m excited to read it.
Who knows where this might lead? Call me an optimist but I have a feeling that this could mean that a few more seconds of that elusive fifteen minutes of fame might be coming my way.
It ain’t the cover of the Rolling Stone but it’s not every day that a writer from a major worldwide news outlet seeks me out to talk to me about my songwriting. That’s a huge validation of my efforts at staying true to my vision. I must be doing something right.
Our hope for the new year is that we all encourage the positive energy in our lives and enjoy the day to day, leaving good will and love in our wake.
Paul McCartney was right when he sang, “The love you take is equal to the love you make.”
Our wish for the new year is that we Americans have chosen a good and decent man to lead the free world by example of integrity and reason. One who will set the tone for a world at peace and engaged in making the future a lot better than the recent past.
“You may say that I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.” John Lennon
So, here’s the Bossa Nova Beatniks’ New Year's message in song.
And here is a video of a song that one of our MySpace friends sent us. It makes us feel good about this world we share.
