Northern Canaries in your extended network Posted at 8:13 PM Jul 15, 2007 view more
About me: We're a supporters group for exiled Norwich City fans in the North of England.
We've been running in some form or other for about 8 years after Leeds based Jim van Wijk realised that the people in the away ends at Northern Grounds couldn't have all dragged themselves up from Norfolk for the day.
An initial half dozen fans joined up meeting in pubs for the occassional pre match beer and our numbers steadily increased to approaching 300 at our peak in the promotion season.
We've had 3 Northern forums (at Sheffield, Blackpool & Hull) which have all been attended by Delia, Michael and the entire board of directors. The first forum at Hillsborough Arena will long be remembered for the rendition of On the Ball City (the extended 12" version) by Canary legend Ron Ashman.
We also had an excellent evening with Iwan Roberts at the (Northern) launch of his his book All I Want for Christmas, in Huddersfield.
Over the years we've also had numerous other socials at the Dogs in Belle Vue, the Cricket at Old Trafford and a Curry run in Leeds.
We've run mini buses to both home and away games and our five a side team plays in the Stockport Power league.
Our 11 a side team is always looking for players and indeed opponents.
We've had many fantastic experiences at away games such as the promotion party at Crewe, the 5-3 at Burnley and the fancy dress at Oakwell on our way to the play offs to name but 3.
Another of the highlights was the FA Youth Cup game at Old Trafford when our youngsters took on the might of Man Utd at Old Trafford. Around 500 Canary fans (over half of them Northern Canaries) sang their hearts out for the kids throughout the game. The memory of Nicky Howell rounding their keeper to put us in front before ripping off his shirt and charging towards us all in the corner still brings a tear to many a Northern Canary eye.
We have a player of the year award named after the late Charlie Ewing who was an exiled Norwich fan who lived in Preston and used to travel to every Norwich game home and away on the train, even though it often involved getting home as the sun was rising.
Not bad for a pensioner I'm sure you'll agree.
The current holder of the award is Paul McVeigh, although he's never actually had his hands on the trophy as the previous winner, Damien Francis, mislaid it when he moved house.
We always try and meet up for a beer and chat before a northern game so be sure to get in contact.
We're also on Facebook, shouldn't be too hard to find, the group is called er Northern Canaries.

Who I'd like to meet: Norwich City fans who live up north (or anywhere else for that matter).

i've produced for the start of this season (30th august) a limited edition run of "timperley bigshorts f.c." badges and puzzle sets.... now up on ebay....

Are you coming up for the city game in the carling cup? I fancie our chances in that if we shore up at the back. I met FOUR canarys in crete a week ago. How odd is that!
Well it was a great game tonight and really nice to meet the Northern Canaries at last! A brilliant result only marred by the fact our car was broken into which was parked very near to the ground :(
Alright Mate! Sos didnt reply to quick been out in cyprus. Got back half hour before kick off. You make it down to the game? By the sounds of things we were on the back foot for most of it. Still a point away aint bad.....
I know, would have been better if the game was couple of weeks later, but Im still hoping to get up for the game. Would have liked to have got to Preston but have work :(
hey folks! currently living in the fine city, but moving to uni in scarborough in a few weeks. Does that qualify me to become a Northern Canary?! Klobo
Not making it i dont think. I get back from holiday sometime that day so would be cutting it fine. Im thinking maybe Hull or Wolves but im not sure yet. Are you heading for Preston?
Cheers for the add mate. I am located in manchester and go to northern Norwich games with my little brother who i am trying to convert into a canary. Our paths will no doubt have crossed sometime!
Yes an Inflatable Canary. This photo was taken during the superb CSS set and it was still there after Klaxons. Didn't get a chance to have a chat with the owner unfortunately.
Ooh, they're saying Jamie Cureton wants to move back to Carrow Road. That would be AWESOME! I'm so excited about that, plus Scunthorpe have allowed Sharp to enter negotiations with us. Imagine if we got both of them! Although Earnshaw might be leaving I suppose...
Who would you lot rather have next season, Sutton or Sharp? I know it's looks like Sutton is out of the question, but if he wasn't? It's tough. Experience and canary heritage, or youth and future prospects?
