   About The Northerners
Eric Hein and the Northerners is a Montreal-based group of improvisational musicians. The music draws from many different influences (both music and literature). The format is always changing and the songs are always different from show to show. When we record we try to record as live and as real as possible... for better or worse.

Hey Eric,

I finally pulled myself away from my own stuff and gave all your tunes here a good listen. I prefered Tourists and When the Rain it Started - especially the harmonica... thought it was the best little bit of flare going. I would really love to help you record one of your songs one of these days.

I've got a few new tunes up too, check em out and let me know what you think.

I recently had the privelege of watching Eric Hein and the Northerners perform live at the Shaika Cafe. Eric complained about being under the weather, but that didn't stop him from putting together a tidy and professional set.

Knowing Eric from his highschool days, what I remember best was his slick and confident improvisational virtuoso blues guitar solos, performing such rock/blues standards as Little Wing and Voodoo Chile. When I was younger it was like watching the next Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Eric hasn't lost touch with the Delta blues that influenced his early days, but for his set at Shaika he donned his writer's cap strumming away and singing (a side of Eric I had never seen). It was not until the final song of the set that he really showed his chops.

The tunes were still bluesy, but more on the side of folk, and what a spring illness might have set him back in performance it couldn't hide the fact that Eric has a knack for writing catchy tunes.

Still, he seemed most comfortable when it appeared as though he was just jamming away as with the final song of the night which was the most polished and comfortably performed by the rest of the cast (Mike and Brian). It was when they all seemed most in their element.
